Most people work their way up by starting at smaller/less lucrative bars and restaurants, or by working as a “barback” at a club for awhile while waiting for a bartending spot to open up. Then hopefully you get a chance.

No high volume, high grossing, popular restaurant or club hires bartenders with zero experience.

Much of the above can sometimes be circumvented by being an extremely attractive female though.
What if you have money to spend and want to do it for fun, could you potentially network with club owners and get them to take a chance?

No. Age doesn't matter as long as experience is there. Also, unless the restaurant is of the elite class (Celebrity chef, Michelin Star, or both), chances are the restaurant only hires front of house for part time. This is so they don't have to offer health insurance, as the margins in restaurants/bars is thin.
Well I do not have the experience at all, so there is the downfall. Is it possible to just know how to make drinks and get a club owner to take a chance on you?

It’s no more or less cringe than anything else. Never done it but it would actually suit my lifestyle quite well.

Fact is, until you have enough equity to do what you want to do with the rest of your life, you’re a working stiff the same as anyone else, I don’t care if you’re a doctor, lawyer, or deliver pizza. You’re a worker drone.

Build your equity however you like. I’m sure good bar tenders do quite well with tips, aren’t under any real pressure, don’t need qualifications and get paid to socialise. If you’re a night owl it’s going to suit you as well.

if you really don't know many people like that, i'd just go ham at visiting all the bars you can around you

unsure if where you live is different. but there's prob at least 50 bars around me

you could start out asking for the manager and seeing if that works. if you don't get anything there you can switch your strategy up to trying to befriend the people there (bartenders/ managers/ owners), etc.

Yeah, that will be my go. I wonder if it helps that if you have money then you can potentially have a better shot at working the bar since the managers will be like "if he wants to do it for not just money alone". It is tricky since I am in NYC and right now, almost everything is closed or at minimal capacity with indoor dining. Even bars I used to roam are largely reservations only and you have to be at a table.

Nah man, unfortunately it doesn’t work like that. Not only do you not have any bartending experience, it sounds like you don’t have any restaurant experience either. People without any restaurant/bar experience don’t just slide into a bartending position at a decent club. It’s basically unheard of.

Bartending may not be rocket science, but there’s absolutely some skill involved. Skill that only comes from experience. Nightclub owners don’t hire inexperienced bartenders because it costs them money.

With no experience your options are limited to dive bars, chain restaurants, etc. maybe taking a chance on you...but obviously the money won’t be in the same ballpark as what can be made at a busy club.

Never if the money is legit. All jobs are a means to an end. If you can provide for your family and or for the lifestyle you want then it does not matter what your job is if you're happy with doing it.

I find it hard to believe that no exceptions can be made if you are close with the owner. If anything, you should be able to BS a resume.

Memorize 100+ cocktails to heart, show that you have a handle on most brands of most liquors, be a normal social person, and yeah anything is possible. This is more likely if you are a hot female.

New restaurants are most likely to hire new people. Downfall is that while its opening you make legit minimum wage until it opens, and then you better hope your marketing team is solid. However, if the restaurant ends up becoming popular, you have senority.

You could also apply as a barback. Get hired as one (They are more likely to not need experience), memorize all the cocktails in the restaurant and then some, then you can get moved up quickly because bartenders turn over super quick.

LOL I know guys bartending well into 50's and basically legends in town.

They made decent livings two, one in particular brought a bad ass stone house in a gated community, had to be in the $350-400K range.
The billionaire and the beggar both have 24 hours in a day.

Am a cubecel making six figs - if I was fired today, I'd find a bartender job at a beach bar (**** I'd even bar back if that is where I'd have to start). Tended in college and the ability to leave your job when you walk off the premises is goat.

In my city, all barbacks are short Latinos....I find it odd but it is needless to say that they never get moved up to bartender.

Goldman Sachs DJ gives me hope, I so admire people like that. Really do want to be that kind of fun professional, do not why there are not more like them. Anyways, seeming like this bartending thing might be an uphill climb. Definitely need to learn more.

I dunno, honestly I wouldn't mind being a bartender for fun if I could(after COVID BS is done). Would be a good way to go out and stay a part of the social scene without actually getting hammered all the time).

I know a couple girls who'd bartend at this club I went to fairly regularly before COVID, and it probably wasn't a good job for them. Both late 20s, and the club would close at 2am and they would often drink for another 2-3 hours after the club closed every Friday & Saturday night before going home or crashing at one of their apartments nearby. I personally don't think it's too crazy to stay out until 5AM on weekends(I do it fairly regularly when bars and clubs are open), but they did it every Friday and Saturday night(and would often do a Sunday funday as well) getting super drunk pretty much every night after work. That's the kind of job that catches up with you quickly.

Yeah, any decent sized city there are plenty of older bartenders and it's not a big deal. Usually they are pretty cool and decent to talk to. I'd imagine they probably start looking to make moved out of the 2-4AM club scene around 35ish though, and maybe to something a little more upscale and relaxed.

Really, ageism is only a thing in more conservative areas where people think certain milestones should be accomplished by certain ages, and people accept mental illness rather than just living their lives. My brother has a good friend from work who he thinks is like 60(the guy never gives a straight answer) and they party and do drugs and chit a coupe times per month. I'm sure there would be some situations he wouldn't bring the guy to, but it's not like people are crazy judgmental where it would bother them(like this situation would if you did it in a smaller town somewhere).
