    What's the best fighting discipline for self-defence irl?

    Discounting avoiding conflict, using a gun (ameribrahs), or running away, what's the best form of fighting for self-defence if the worst came to worst?

    Preferably one that wouldn't take 10 years to get decent at.

    Wrestling, judo, muay thai. Muay thai is good because leg strikes allow for better distance control than punches. You're right to suspect BJJ. It takes a long time to get good at, and groundfighting is risky in the wild. (The Gracie Combatives curriculum is good though and not too time-consuming).

    If you can find a VERY GOOD krav maga school, that's also great, but it is hard to find a good one.

    Also, my fighter friends were recently discussing a street fight pro tip: super strong flashlight. You can shine it in people's eyes and then slug them with the weight of the thing.

    Your best bet is to run away. Fighting in an uncontrolled environment is stupid.

    But if you really have to fight, you're gonna want to learn enough grappling to know how to get off the ground. On the ground is when his buddies come and stomp you.

    For striking, Muay Thai and/or boxing. Muay Thai has bad ass knees, elbows, kicks and punches, along with clinch work, while boxing has the best punches and punches are the safest to use since they leave you least vulnerable compared to the rest. Although punching in the wrong spot will get you a broken hand...

    I usually hear boxing/muay thai for striking, and then wrestling for grappling. Although I have a bunch of friends that wrestled all through middle school- College. So probably bias there.

    As others have said, avoidance/running is the best option. Thankfully I have top athletic genes and played collegiate soccer so I have in my back pocket. 99% of the population couldn't catch me in a sprint.

    I really want to learn how to fight though just in case. I know some very basic striking and wrestling from getting wrecked by my friends since middle school as they try out their new moves on me. But not trained in any way so I'd get rocked by anyone that was.

    Take some MMA classes from a local reputable gym. You'll learn grappling and striking.

    Was thinking about this. I kid I know from college fights in Bellator and teaches classes at a pretty big UFC gym in Chicago.

    Will look around closer to me though. Pretty sure there are some good ones nearby.

    ive been fighting for like 10 years since hs. i gave my nephew this advice and he hasnt lost a street fight

    always keep arms up for defense. dont swing just for sake of it. go in for it when you see an opening. keep your self distanced from them. and this is a big part. if youre distance and back up. they tend to walk forward/or charge. that is when you go for the kill.

    ive seen a dude run form a fight. not like real run just like back up 12 steps. other dude chased him and he ran into his fist

    pankration is the most complete i think. kickboxing or muay thai is the most balanced but doesn't teach you groundwork or grappling

    I mean, strengthen/PT, but there are also great knee sleeves out there for wrestling. Bauerfeind makes an excellent one. Custom-fit with your measurements.

    Striking with legs can be risky as if they catch you it leaves you extremely vulnerable, especially if you are clueless on ground game. Boxing teaches you to keep your eyes on target, maintain distance, keep your guard up, good footwork and punches. It gives you a chance to escape. I enjoy fighting but I assume anyone outside a dedicated facility is packing either a knife or a 9.

    Chokes are extremely useful to learn, I put down someone much larger than me with a rear naked choke outside Last Supper club before I even knew what it was. I learned what it was later that night by a 15 year bouncer vet, ex military badass, he later went on to train a few guys for UFC

    honestly probably muay thai, but most fights end up on the ground so bjj or wrestling is good too

    Disagree, I at LEAST carry around a 4-6 inch knife on me at all times and if I bust it out to open a box, cut off a tag, or some other useful task usually employed by knives I get a lot of weird looks or comments like "why do you even have a knife on you"

    I'd say 1 in 50 average people carry some sort of weapon on them not counting non lethal ones like mace. If my county allowed it I would open carry everywhere I don't give a fuk what other people think

    I carry a knife too. Leatherman Wave. razor sharp knives and serrated blades. takes on hit on the neck or 1-2 to the abdomen to kill someone.

    the point is, fighting randoms is a low IQ way to an early death.

    Looks are enough to intimidate the majority of tough guy wannabes,trained boxers,mma guys rarely get cocky to engage.
    Personally did 5 yrs freestyle wrestling during middle-high school and about 6months of boxing
    Still haven't fought since 16 or 17yr old ,11 or 12 years.
    Easiest is to bulk up and some boxing ,wrestling much harder to master and unneeded
