Can you all explain how tunes and Ron ratings work?

I understand tunes give more power via boost. Was looking at APR's website and their tunes give different HP/TQ specs depending on the octane you use. 95, 98, 104, etc. All of which had RON. And then there's E85, corn fuel if I'm not mistaken but I know

Where do you get this stuff from? I've never seen 95 RON, 98 RON. Can you use regular 91 or 93? I'm guessing the computer changes the boost settings with different fuels you use automatically

98 RON is about the same as the 93 MON you get in the US. 95 RON would be about 91 MON.

Just a different way of measuring the octane rating.

Only 2 things make horsepower. Air and Fuel. These 2 combine to make a combustion which produces horsepower. You need both to have a combustion and increasing either will also add more horsepower (to a point)

APR tunes mainly VAG vehicles, which are turbocharged. Turbochargers draw upon exhaust gas to "spool" the turbocharger which compresses the air. The air is then released into the engine thus giving the combustion more air an thus more power.

How big or fast your combustion is depends on what kind of fuel you are using. The each engine or tune is designed for a specific octane range. 93Octane = 98RON. This is going to be the highest grade pump gas you will be able to get in most areas. Generally higher octane fuels allow for your car to achieve more boost. Which means more power.

Tunes raise the factory limit of boost of the turbocharger at each rpm segment or even by gear. Your tuner needs to know what kind of gas you plan to be using before he tunes your car. If you are running 93octane, maybe you can achieve 5-6psi over stock. If you are running ethanol fuel mix, then you can achieve even more boost. If you are also using a Methanol Kit, to cool the cylinders, then you can make even more boost.

Thats how tune vs Ron ratings work

I'd counter that and say it's resistance to knock, which is more timing related than boost pressure related. Higher knock resistance fuels will handle more timing without detonation.

That's not to say they don't also run more boost in the tunes suited for higher RON/MON fuels.

I run an APR tune on 98.
I'd recommend them, seems like they have a pretty good warranty too if you ever **** up or wipe your tune.
Stage 2 and 3 tunes are also heavily discounted if you own Stage 1 too.

I read somewhere a while ago that 98 is meant to have a guaranteed minimum of octane in Australia.
95 and 91 can deviate up to 5 places either way.

Tell the tuner what the highest readily available octane is in your area and then run that gas. Honestly, just run premium gas and stay away from everything else until you do a ton more research.
