This whole thing was used as a test for the coming AI and robotics revolution. I doubt the virus was planned, but it was a perfect excuse to see what would happen if 50% or more of jobs became obsolete, which will be happening very quickly once 5g mesh is fully rolled out and quantum computing makes a bit more progress.
