    Lee Priest curling 221 lbs

He probably left 50 more in the tank, but he wanted a short video

I know what you mean, but isn't that kind of a silly concept in the contemporary world? Sure, you rely on your legs, back and shoulders for strength in daily life in the rare instances where that's needed, but I would say fewer than 10% of the population of nearly all first world countries actually needs to apply strength to the standards of gym culture in their functional, routine lives, or could realistically expect to outside of a complete anomaly, like an unexpected fight or a sudden emergency. It's good to be prepared for that, but if that's the case, bicep strength is going to be highly important too.

Beyond that, if we're being honest, this is all mostly for social competition and personal validation; whether that's vanity or legitimate self-improvement in each case can't easily be said.

I guess it is important for him personally, as for others is aesthetics and low body fat is more important.
But I agree with your idea. The chances to use functional strength in your daily life are extremely low. More likely to know how to punch, to wrestle and to run fast or for a longer time. And even these are quite low... well, it depends on place of living/lifestyle/age, I assume.

    - personal validation
    - male competition
    - adrenaline
    - aesthetics - well, the reason most guys start lifting and also many of them are attracted later by the male/social competition factor... which can be good (giving you a purpose) or bad (how much do you bench, bro > ego lifting > major injuries > surgeries > time & time waisted)

There are a lot of people who play sports and engage in other athletic activity for leisure or work in addition to just lifting weights in the gym, so opportunities to use functional strength on a regular basis are pretty common.
