Worth buying new GFX card, or just buy a new PC?

My PC is a decade old, paid $2k back in 2010 though. I've upgraded the memory a few years ago, and recently to SSD.

At this point, it struggles to playback a 4k movie. I'd also like to be able to play COD on it, but that isn't necessary.

I'm considering buying a GTX1660 or 1070 card for it, but not sure if it's the right move.

I am leaning this way though, the SSD was a game changer, and I've read elsewhere that the GFX will make a huge difference alone. Apparently the PCI v2 (vs v3) is not much of a bottleneck.

Take your ssd out and get a new one imo. Even a 2020 budget build is gunna poop on that thing at this point.

Agree get a new machine. Could take the SSD out and put back the original HD wipe it and install windows 10 (it should have a key from the motherboard also make sure to write down the key just in case) and then sell it for whatever you can get on craigslist/fb marketplace

Could reuse the SSD in your new computer. Even if it comes with an SSD could install it as an extra one. Call of duty the latest one is probably like 100gb so could install it on that SSD.

Wait for 3000 series to come out and build a budet PC with one of those cards srs as they will be cheaper than 2000 series.


You will get bottleneck if you buy those cards for your current pc.

1660 is a great budget card, but if I were you I'd just try to buy a pre-built computer in the <$500 price range.

When I connect via HDMI, I can only get 1080p 75Hz.
When I connect via DisplayPort, I can get 1440p 100Hz.

So it look like I should upgrade GFX. Not sure I'm fuked buying an entire new PC because I'll probably get the PS5.

What GFX card should I get <$200?

I wouldn't get anything less than a 1080 TI for COD. You arent going to get anywhere close to 144fps @ 1440p even with that and a current-gen CPU.

What's the point of 144Hz when your games will run at 30FPS?

Still nicer to have a high refresh rate for basic usage. Plus I play old games on it sometimes which will get easily enough FPS.

PS5 and cheap card is the better option I think. I’ll play new games on PS5.

It won't do anything close to 1440P at 144hz. You might get 60fps

Also OC'ed my 920 to 3.5GHz... 30% boost to reduce bottleneck slightly.

And yes, I already get 144 FPS playing CS 1.6 and will with some other games now. Like I've already said, I'll use the PC for older games and get the benefit.

Amd 3300x, b550 board and 16gb of ram.

Cheapest most value bang for the buck and pairs well with the GPU.

Installed, and worth it even for the 144Hz desktop experience itself.

Might install COD just as an experiment, but unlikely to run well.
