1 evening of drinking in a while. Is it gonna be bad?

I'm 21 years old, pretty muscular, also pretty chubby, trying to get lean.

I'll be going to a friend's house with some pals and we'll have some drinks (me as few as possible, but they like drinking soo yeah).

Now, I haven't had ANY alcohol in like 4-5 months (and didnt plan on having, unless there's an event like this coming, where I have to drink some), since I got serious, and dont plan on having alcohol anytime soon after (hopefully lol).

Should I expect something bad, if anything, from only 1 drinking night in 5 months, regarding my losing fat goals? Not gonna affect my muscles, but hopefully I wont get some fat.

Also what drink do you recommend is better? or the least bad one should I say.

Well, drinking can be 1/2 a beer, or it can mean 15 shots of 100-proof rum.

You need to be specific on the dose.

One evening in 5 months isn't going to amount to anything. Lower carb beer or clear liquor and a non sugary mixer.

It's gonna be deffinetely more than half a beer, I'll probably have some (4-5) cocktails of whiskey/rum with diet coke. It's not gonna be more than 200-250 ml of regular whiskey/rum, not some stronger stuff.

100 proof blah makes me sick thinking about it

Op if you drink once or twice a year generally you’re fine just don’t drink so much that you get alcohol poisoning and your tolerance most likely has gone down

Long term it won't make any difference... However, if you haven't consumed alcohol in months, you'll probably feel crappy the next day and not be able to train well at all...

For fat gain/loss, it's going to be a matter of calorie intake... again, long term one day doesn't make a difference.

Have a Mexican theme to your party. Tequila shots and Corona chasers. Cuervo Silver is pretty smooth and won't break your wallet.

Alcohol is technically a poison. There is no safe dose - but small amounts will cause so little harm you won't notice it. But let's not pretend (BTW, I'm aiming to have a beer this evening).

Only booze I really enjoy is a nice IPA or Amber, or gin and tonics made with Hendricks fun

    Moscow Mules are good too

But, I haven’t drank in about a year now.

no I’m in recovery, bad times with anything over 40% made me violently ill because I would chug it. And chugging 151 BACARDÍ or those little 99 fruity bottles, is like asking to be sick for days. -.- I can not drink anything

The only immediate trigger liquors I have are Jager and Amaretto... some terrible, terrible memories from college.

These days I have a beer maybe two time a year... and it’s a single beer.

Literally never crave booze anymore... only have it during a yearly family reunion and on thanksgiving, if at all.

I’d rather just eat pie and stuffing

see sweets > over booze any day now. I don’t crave alcohol anymore, it’s been years. Honestly, I enjoy myself more sober doing things. I am present and more social

I’m definitely more present but to be honest, when I’m buzzed/very lightly drunk, I’m actually more ‘myself’ because my anxiety tends to make me more tense/timid in my day to day... sucks but it’s true.

I was always a super, super happy drunk... the exact opposite of someone who would ever pick a bar fight. I just get funny, talkative, and relaxed.

However I got such bad hangovers, my stomach gets destroyed... it’s just not worth it at all. So in a way I miss the ‘downer’ feeling (I’ve also suffered from prior substance issues around things like opioids for short periods) but at this point in my life I just can’t maintain a functional daily balance and reach goals if I have any alcohol regularly.

So I’m definitely team snacks over shots ;-)

Reminds me of a guy in knew in college. 1985. Most of us were 18 year old freshman, but this guy was 20. He spent 2 years in the Army before going to college. One night this guy smelled like hell and was naked. He opened up a manhole cover to try to access some tunnels that went under the university. He jumped in over his head into the used grease holding tank for the dorms cafeteria.

Another time half his face and neck was red. He was doing a flaming shot of 151 Bacardi and missed his mouth. He threw the shot over his face and down his neck.

He lasted 2 semesters, and I don't know where he ended up.

Nothing that you will drink that night will make you fat to notice it in terms of calories, but if you drink more than 2-3 bears or two glasses of wine, or just enough to make you feel seek the next day, it will ruin your next 2-3 days. You will have headaches, and your meal schedule would be compromised; this would make you see differences in your weight in the wrong way.

Yeah as long as the alcohol you drink doesn’t completely destroy your calorie count (and even if it does, it’s only one night and can be reversed pretty easily) you’ll be okay. I drank heavily, binging on 10-15 standard drinks at least once a week for years on end and still managed to maintain a respectable body and a six pack. As others have mentioned, it’s the choices you make when you’re hungover and recovering that have the potential to derail you. As long as you’re disciplined with your training and diet regardless, go for gold.

I have been drinking less lately, although am not immune to pushing it to a risky level. 2019 I lost my older brother and my very serious girlfriend left me unexpectedly and for no clear reason, so I drank way more than I should have in the aftermath of that. There's a case to be made for coping with it to a point but it ultimately doesn't help you and I'd ultimately be better off not having had any.

As regards diet it can't be anything but a matter of calories (and alcohol is both calorically dense and nutritionally empty), but from my own anecdotal experience, I used to have a wiry, lean physique and that stopped right around when I began drinking if that says anything generically.

I'm not a doctor or nutritionist, or dietician, rather a hack. Drinking is counterproductive to the process of bodybuilding and gains. First issue is the sugars and usually obvious to most. Beer, wine, or mixed drinks are all with a fair amount of calories and sugar. It will also dehydrate you and remove the water from your body that is needed to develop/heal.

That said, if / when I drink it is usually high quality vodka or tequila with lime seltzer water. I never drink more than two so if it is a social thing, I try to keep it going without refills beyond my 2 drink limit. If I do, I can cheat and just get a refill of the water minus the alcohol.

As I get older, I realize that being drunk or buzzed is just not interesting anymore. I appreciate being alert and focussed. When I want to relax, I do what old people do, drink tea and read a book. If I want to cheat on calories/diet, I eat a single cookie. OMG!!!! I'm getting old?

Sorry to hear about your loss. I lost my older brother when I was 20 (he was 21)... still think about the dude every day even now 15 years later.
