Gained about 10 lbs since Jan 2020, should I keep gaining?

I was told to start gaining weight last year, so I've gained about 10-11 lbs since the beginning of the year.. I'm 40, 6'1" 190ish
Don't really feel like I've gained much muscle, especially since the loss of the gym because of the stupid virus. Should I keep trying to gain more weight, or should I start losing weight? If I lose weight, will I also lose what (little) muscle I managed to build? Having trouble figuring out what to do here. I can post photos if needed..Thank you

If you aren't gaining muscle, then why would you want to continue to gain weight?

Do you just like getting fatter?

    Photos needed.

Full body in natural lighting and if some before pics would help to determine if you have added muscle or not.

Who told you to start gaining weight and why would you listen to them?
All it takes is consistency, effort, proper nutrition, good programming, and TIME.

You're 40. Take responsibility. You chose to gain weight.

If you aren't lifting weights on a good program and lifting properly you should not be trying to gain weight as it will be pretty much all fat.
If you don't get what you want you didn't want it bad enough

I don't see any reason to continue gaining. I would eat at a slight deficit. Are you doing any lifting? You need to be doing something for resistance exercise.

Yes, as best I can without the gym. I have dumbbells and a bench, and some bands.

No way you should be trying to gain weight without proper use of a gym. I’d either cut body fat now while doing what you can to maintain as much muscle as possible with the limited equipment you do have and eating plenty of protein, or just stay at maintenance if you want to play it safe.

I can do the deficit, that's not a problem. One question, on days that I workout, more calories are burned, so should I eat at maintenance on those workout days, or the deficit might be too much?

No keep a constant deficit. There is no such thing as too big a deficit if you can handle it consistently. Consistently is the key word. A big deficit for a few days then a big cheat day is not being consistent. 500-1000 calorie per day deficit will get you there. It all comes down to weekly calories so some days the deficit will be bigger than other days. The best though is a fairly consistent calorie intake every day.

I didn't mean to imply that I would be having big cheat days.. I just meant that if my caloric deficit is 500 on rest days, then on workout days, that same caloric intake would result in a larger deficit on workout days because of the additional calories expended exercising. But I understand what you're saying, I'll keep the calories the same regardless of workout vs rest days and see how I get along, thank you.

Don't eat back workout calories. I used cheat day to over emphasize a point. Good luck
