Long story so just leaving cliffs.
-OP quits job in 2017 because ******* company passed him up on a promotion
-******* company calls OP back offering said promotion.
-OP performs new position at work from 2017-early 2020.
-In March, ******* company lays off 90% of workforce due to covid and demotes OP in order to keep OP
-OP learns today that company now wants to promote OP back to the position I was in before the demotion.
I truly loved the money. (Went from making 120k to 186k after promotion).
Honestly though, the stress level was extremely high and I was the lowest paid idiot in my position, even at 186k. I stopped working out regularly and my sleep suffered due to stress.
I dont want to go back to doing my old position but the bank account has been suffering this year.
Wut do?

I've already been looking for months. Nobody is hiring locally, and the jobs that are hiring aren't even worth my time srs.
We provide consulting for very specific projects. Some of it is office, some of it is field work
I dont think staying at my position is an option. Even if it is, I'd be signing my death warrant with this company.LTC crew, Superbike crew, BMW crew, M Performance crew, Mountain bike crew, Firearms crew

In this type of environnment, I'd say take it and save every penny. I've had a soul crushing job like this before and if definitely sucks. But this looks like this will be a prolonged downturn that is just beginning, so even a stressful job earning $185k will be good for you longterm.
There are going to be some really good investment opportunities coming in another 6-12 months, so you'll be in good shape having an extra $60k laying around to capitalize.
Also, now is a fantastic time to start your own company. There are tons of basic labor companies being started now that will make average Joes into millionaires in another decade.

Should have told them no the first time. Or demanded a ridiculous salary to come back. They made two mistakes when they didn't promote you and then when they let you go. When they called grovelling for you to come back, you should have made them eat crow. Instead you let them cuck you. Then they took advantage if you.
It sounds like your problem now is you're making excuses in order to stay. Take a lesser job if it gets your foot in the door at a company you might want to work for. If there really aren't jobs where you are, then move to where the jobs are. Despite covid, there are still places where the economy thrives.I'm #12 in Y2J's "club"...and I'm scared.

Were not even in a post-rona world yet.. So i doubt a lot of people are hiring, especially in the kinda position that would offer a 120k salary. I mean on the upside you would be making more money and you know the job already.. Downside your showing your easily expendable to them
Maybe now that you had the job, you wont be as stressed about it.
If you do go back to the job. def ask for more money

why not taking it is a death sentence?
seems like you are a valid employee if they kept you...
do you like everyone? is it chill? come and go as you want? personally id use this as a excuse to take the position again but higher salary. you have alot of pull here if they kept you. otherwise they wouldnt be cucking an employee like this.

Well for one. They asked me if I would rather take a demotion or be laid off. Stupidly I took the demotion. They offered it to me and one other person. I could have had 4 months paid time off instead.
Secondly. I took the demotion with a verbal agreement that I would return to my old position when the time came. If I back out now, they will surely be upset.
They may not fire me but they have a knack for being passive aggressive with people they know they can't get rid of but who they are also pissed at.
Also, it's important to note that I feel as though the only reason they called me back after quitting and promoted me to begin with, is because they found out I was going to work for a top competitor. They were worried that I would take some of my peers with me, as well as my clients.
Unfortunately I don't currently have that kind of power during these economically hard times, and therefore can't make unreasonable demands. Any other time that would be an option. But not right now.LTC crew, Superbike crew, BMW crew, M Performance crew, Mountain bike crew, Firearms crew
