    Muscle-ups, and hang clean and press

    This idea has been running around my head lately. I’ve been thinking of trying a workout plan comprised solely of muscle-ups, and hang clean and press, plus some light cardio and stretching. The idea is that nearly all muscle groups will be targeted with the two main exercises. What thoughts might y’all have on this?

    Kipping for a muscle up isnt the best way to build back strength or biceps either. Seems very press dominant.

    The idea of using a minimal set of exercises might seem appealing on paper but there is no practical or theoretical reason why it should be a superiour approach. A craftsman has as many tools as he needs to produce the best final result (not the smallest possible number). Plus you'll get bored of that after a couple of days or weeks in any case.

    If you're doing this as some form of training and conditioning to support a sport you play and train for, then minimal workouts can be great approach and DeadLift + OHP + MuscleUp + Cardio may be good for some situations depending on your sport (e.g. darts and triathlon may have different focus).
    But as an attempt to train covering nearly all muscles? I'm not convinced!

    Sounds good on paper, not so much fun in practice. And we all know if training isn’t somewhat enjoyable, it won’t be a permanent thing.

    A hang is really meant as more of a progression towards a full clean & press from the floor, which would be what i'd replace a hang clean & press with, once you've learned it. Hang cleans have their place, aside from training the clean - they're phenomenal for laying into the traps hard without much lower body taking over. For situations where you're trying to reach out to the most muscle groups with as few exercises possible, it's only a piece of the pie - it won't do everything like clean & press, clean & jerk, deadlifts, farmer's walks, etc. A little variety makes for a good balance that will serve well in the long run. Taking shortcuts might end in muscle imbalances, regrets, and a lot of time you can't get back to try again with a different approach to achieve the goal you're seeking.
