How will you remember Conor Mcgregor?

Conor Mcgregor is a very polarizing and controversial figure in mixed martial arts.
Most people will agree he is a terrible role model and bad ambassador for the sport, assaulting elderly people, sexual assault allegations, smashing fans phones, shoving Bellator referees, Islamophobic remarks, offensive trash talking, throwing metal dollies at buses, arrogance etc. He is probably the complete opposite of humble respectful guys like GSP and Robert Whitaker, which is why people crap on him 100x more when he loses.

Now, how will you remember him as a fighter? What is his legacy in your eyes?

-Will you remember him for knocking out Jose aldo (unbeaten for 10 years) in record breaking time?
-Will you remember him as the first ever simultaneous double champion?
-Will you remember him for his trilogy with Nate?
-Will you remember him for getting his ass whooped in front of the whole world by Khabib and tapping multiple times?
-Or will you not give a single crap about him?

I personally think he will be remembered for getting his ass kicked by Khabib. It had 2.5 million PPV buys, which is over twice the amount of people who watched him beat aldo. He should have stayed retired after beating Eddie. He would have went down as a legend and retire as a winner. He might be richer but the Khabib fight really ruined his stock and tough guy image.

He raisin'd down to knock out a bunch of little people. He peaked twice when he flawlessly defeated Alvarez and when he landed that uppercut on Mayweather that made him go crosseyed. He'll be remembered most for his personal and professional decline afterward.

i agree. You are only as good as your last few fights. What he did to aldo and eddie is so far in the past and more people witnessed his downfall and destruction instead of his rise to the top

He beat a declining Aldo and Eddie who was one of the weakest lightweight champions in UFC history. We saw what happens to him when he faces Elite level competition like Khabib. He also lost to Nate who's nowhere near a great and won a totally BULLCHIT stoppage against Chad Mendes with like 4 seconds left. He's a good fighter but, highly overrated and definitely not in the discussion for GOAT.

A top featherweight, with great boxing for MMA and who was great at cutting weight and beating smaller guys than him.
Great performance vs Eddie, but not much of a resume at LW and WW.
Good trash, but not as good as Cruz, Bisping, Askren, Jorge and Chael.
Verbally owned by Nate a few times and once by Eddie (and Eddie is a ****ty trashtalker)
Knew how to make money and I cannot believe some people were/are that stupid to believe he could beat a top boxer.
I would have liked to see him vs:
    Jorge
    Gaethje
    Ferg
    Frankie
    Zabit
    Yair
    Wboy

    That's it!

Oh, also two quotes about him

    Moose

"That ginger-headed f*ck is retarded," Mousasi said. "In the interview I mentioned, they were talking about respect or whatever, and then he texted me on Twitter. He messaged me, and I said, ‘what're you going to do with your 50kg?' And then he was, I don't know, he was philosophical or whatever the f*ck he was writing, he was like, ‘a knife is lighter than a pound, it can cut from ear-to-ear,' whatever the f*ck he was writing. "That guy is a bum. He's a 50kg guy, what the f*ck is he going to do? I bet if he's face-to-face, he's not going to say that. But you know, Twitter gives some people courage."

    Brock

"I take sh*ts bigger than that kid. Come on," Lesnar told Sam Roberts on the SR Show. "I know you kids all play ****ing video games and you live in this ****ing false sense of reality and ****. I'm two hundred and ****ing ninety pounds. "This guys a hundred and forty-five pounds, if he's lucky. If Conor McGregor wants to say some **** to me, and get his name out there more than he already has, by dropping my name, I got about ten ****ing words for him."

    Honestly not that impressed

He beat Max before Max was Max

Got a good punch on Aldo/fight coulda went differently had the punch not knocked Aldo out/Beginning of Aldo's decline anyway

Lost to Nate Diaz who isn't top tier, and in the rematch is was bout even

The rest of them are bum/non champion fighters... yeah you could say he beat dustin porier and cerrone... but Dustin got a lot better after they foguht, so he beat a sheit version of dustin, and Cerrone is terrible. Yes Cerrone is terrible, he's 4-8 in his last 12 fights, another overrated bum

So how do I view Mcgregors career? Guys overrated

Mike Tyson type memories basically. Mike Tyson is not remembered for biting off Holyfield's ear, or some of the pathetic fights he did where he was a shadow of himself, date rape, things like that. No, he's remembered for his when he was prime, absolutely killing it, how he changed the game. Of course we can't forget those things. Even Mohammad Ali had some losses and was nowhere near his prime at the end.

People making endless excuses for his wins, as lucky shots, arguing that Holloway was so young at the time... please. One excuse is as good as another. A win is a win. Saying he never fought anyone, then an excuse after, okay.

About Khabib.... it would be one thing if Khabib was a nobody who couldn't fight. Connor made him work in that fight and landed some good shots.
So about khabib, who's beat him? Oh, that's right, nobody. To this day, Connor is the only one that is still talking about wanting to fight him again. Everyone else is running away. We all know that the night that they fought, Connor was not on his A game to say the least. I think the Connor we have seen lately might be able to beat him.

I think that the new money syndrome got him. He was a poor Irish boy, which when you are poor for Irish, it's pretty bad. Now he went from nobody to somebody. Money and fame gotto his head and it shows. I think a taste of the Mayweather money really did it.

That’s what always impresses me about him is he was so skilled people who don’t understand fighting don’t even get why he was so effective from the nerd aspect of gaming the fight game.

pretty sure any legit fan is going to remember all the **** conor did.

what really resonates with me was how firas zihabi had said conor had the touch of death... no doubt this speaks to the level of conor's striking.

I also remember when Conor fought Priorier and before stopping him, Dustin cracked him coming with a straight right hand. Conor barely grimaced and went to knock him out, amazing.

All of the above OP. But what we can't forget is how he really got pushed by dana, he held the divisions up being double champ without a peep, but dana talking about stripping champions that will fight 2-3 months ago, and the fact that after he got paaaaaid in boxing, fire wasn't really there anymore. There was an article that said he's "retired" for the 3rd time in 4 years Not tryna hear about the win on Donald was a comeback, when donald treats his fights like he's in survival mode in a fighting game lol(brb no time to heal, lets go to the next fight). Also the whole "humble in victory humble in defeat" but talks chit to khabib every month or so about their fight he lost.

Regardless He'll be remembered no doubt.
"You can train as hard as you want to, but without the right fuel supporting your training and recovery, you will never see the results that you should."-Iron Man

Oh by the way...Size f*cking matters, in everything. Don't believe the hype. Size f*cking matters. Size DOESN'T matter to people who don't have any size, that's why they're like "oh size doesn't matter". SIZE, GIRTH, THICKNESS, EVERYTHING. Its a game of inches in life..add up all those inches, Victory muthaf*cker!-Greg Plitt

The most important thing that he showed was that you can become bigger than the sport. He was the first mma fighter that broke into mainstream audiences and made real money. There were others with huge followings but nothing like conor. He showed other fighters that there is a business side to this and people started to build themselves to get more leverage.

In terms of his skills he was undeniable very good but outside of the "Goat" category. It seems like the fanboys overrate him and the haters underrate him. Perhaps one of the most precise strikers and maybe the best power puncher in the 145 division. It would've been awesome to see him fight way more at 155 against everyone but hes smart picking specific fights and going for the money. I think hes earned that right being the most profitable mma fighter ever so cant really blame him

That is true, he finally got Dana to give one of them a higher purse split. They risk broken bones, broken joints and CTE while he takes a huge split of the revenue. Dana will defend his payouts as sound business practices and talk all his expenses and all this chit but bottom line he pays them lower than boxing because he has a near monopoly on the sport. There isnt even competition against teams for best players like the NFL, its either Dana's way or fight in some low tier knock off UFC for even less money.

HATED him when he was coming up and at his peak but looking back I can't be mad at the guy he was a great fighter and got paid. I think he was definitely protected on the way up but he was a huge money maker so you can't really knock them for it and he always delivered.

I think he dodged a bullet and caught Aldo when he was on the decline and I think Edgar would've beat him in 2014-15 but it never happened. I don't think Edgar would've ever beat Aldo because his style was poison to Frankie.

I always hated how they wanted to give Conor a purple heart for fighting Nate Diaz because Nate had fought at 170 a couple times and Conor trained at Auschuwitz to make 145 so they tried to spin it like Nate was two weight classes bigger than Conor when they were essentially the same size, but you heard crickets chirp when Conor smashed guys he was two feet taller than at 145 lol.

Jury is still out but as of now but, in the context of talking about MMA, I won't.

When was the last time you were having any sort of MMA conversation with someone and Conor was mentioned other than matchmaking?

People still talk about GSP. Some call him boring, but that debate still exists. He made a huge impact on the sport, inside the octagon. You remember his performances. I honestly don't remember much about Conor fighting. Some images are there. Few memorable ones. The Jose Aldo KO is most prominent. And that was a flash ko in seconds.

People still debate Fedo's GOAT status. He was iconic for his in ring performance. There's a lasting impact there in the combat sports zeitgeist.

Once Conor calls it quits, I don't see his legacy being anything consequential. He went for the fame and money. He went for the antics. I'm not faulting him that. As an in ring performer though I feel he's never been special.

lettucebreal here, 10 years after his last fight, the main thing people will remember Conor for is that iconic picture of him holding the guard rail backstage in MSG and his walk.
