The idea that "if you tune your vehicle, the dealer will void your car's warranty" is as good as a myth. At MOST, they will void the component that failed, not the whole car's warranty and not "boom warranty gone."

Smart dealers will do their diligence because the last thing the manufacturer wants is a lawsuit that will cost them much more than just replacement of the failed component.

But yeah, back on topic... I think you're right that it's being pushed by the manufacturers for sure.

Really what this means is that I just need to purchase my own tuning software now and learn how to tune my own cars... Ive been threatening to do it for years anyways because I get tired of paying other people for it

The problem is this coinciding with new lockout code that makes 'tune at home' impossible.

Sure, this will be great for the used car markets and cars will become known as good 'tune at home' cars but all of the new toys will likely remain stock.

As it is I strongly suspect that German automakers deliberately leave their ECUs vulnerable to cracking specifically to entice people that want to buy and then mod.

It would not be hard to impose restrictions on this where the incentive to go along with the law overtakes the incentive to make tuner friendly cars.

    I dunno man BMW's b58 took a long-ass time to crack.

So this is only against catless exhausts and pollution bs? Blowers etc are still all ok?

I'm disgusted that the Trump EPA didn't gut this chit, it all originated from Gina McCarthy who hated cars and waged war on them as EPA head until 2016

In MA it is already illegal to modify your exhaust in any way although it is not strictly enforced. All 3 of my cars have aftermarket systems and pass just fine.

Nothing but the truth here. Car enthusiasts are very, very miniscule. EPA doing this will have practically no difference.

You can thank them for that crackdown, especially the ones who “delete” the newer trucks then have the tune with an @$$#0|€ mode to do that.

Too bad that Cummins never did anything with their ethanol engine research, they modified some of their Diesel engines to spark ignition so they could run them on hooch and IIRC, the only real issue was the availability of ethanol as a fuel.

Mainly just that, though some now consider it a right wing political/environmental statement.
