I go to the casino to play poker (pre rona) and I see many people that think they can play, making 'investments' (bets) that are terrible. Oh and I also saw a Chinese girl crying hysterically on the stairs on the way out one time. I guess she made some bad choices.

    EDIT

Also knew a girl a long time ago who had what would be equivalent to her annual salary in credit debt, let's say the same as having ~$35K credit card debt today with a job barely over entry level.

Girl I knew growing up inherited a $280,000 trust fund when she was 18. She blew the entire thing on a car, teaching degree, travel, partying, and blow. Now she’s in credit card debt lol

If she would have put it in S&P 500 mutual funds and left it there, she’d have about $1.3million at 29 years old at this point.

My dad wanted to buy a condo in Aspen Colorado back in the late '70s. It's a ski resort town. He thought $25,000 was too much. Flash forward about 25 years. He told me that he wished he bought it, since they are now going for about 2.5 million.

My girlfriend used to earn 1 to 2 million per year and she spent every penny of it. All she has left from when she was earning that much money is two high end cars lol.

I don't know a total of how much she made/spent over a 10 year period but at the end it was 2 mil per year. Now she just wants a low stress job/lifestyle.

Off the top of my head?
Getting married and then divorcing only a short time after, like a matter of months.
I'm not even talking about the dividing of assets.
Just the cost of the wedding alone.

Also, buying a $500,000+ house as your first home.

Jeeez, I worked with a guy that got around 55k or something and spent it all in a few years on booze with his drinking buddies. I thought that was a lot of money at the time.

Agree, some women only go for deadbeats. No sympathy from me. I know 5 women who still work minimum wage who have been supporting their stay at at home boyfriend for years all because "they're misunderstood."

Worst investments I've seen are people buying relatively cheap land ($15,000) in areas where the govt won't let you build ****. I guess unless the govt deems it habitable which they won't since CA refuses to build more housing that isn't ****ty apartments.

Also knew someone who blew their parent's entire college savings on a new car+upgrades.

Someone kept switching majors, so like 3 semesters were wasted on classes they were never going to use.

Someone told me how someone's parent's cosigned a mortgage for a relative with $0 income and somehow got it approved.

Someone also bought a used car back in the day (90s) for some stupid amount, and it ended up breaking down soon after.

Someone threw away money and bought used car parts (muscle cars, antique car parts) and they've just been sitting in his backyard rusting away taking up like 20% of his lawn.

Also I've seen houses on Zillow foreclosing for such a low amount.

Moving to San Diego is also a really really bad investment. Wages are super low compared to the rest of the state and jobs are super competitive. Housing for a decent home is $700,000. Didn't someone on the misc have to move after they came to SD? I know a few people when I was working minimum wage, who came here from Arizona and Texas who moved back soon after when they realized the cost is way too high.

A good investment turned bad. Buddy put $10K into Crypto, it went to $75K, I told him to take that chit out, or at least his investment + buy something nice. He held and now its worth a couple grand.

Within a few months I see him trying to sell the lots on Craigslist. A few months after that he has another ad up looking for a handyman/lawncare person to fix up the houses and mow the lots in exchange for a free run down house. Then he was posting ads looking for a room to rent just for the weekends. I'm guessing he wanted to come down and do repairs and mow lawns. Last week the county newspaper published a list of all the delinquent tax properties. This guy had about 125 properties on that list, the same amount he bought.

So he bought 125 lots and a few houses. Had the mowing done for 3 years and didn't sell very many. Now he hasn't paid the real estate taxes on all of them, which is around $15,000 in total. If he is lucky, another fool will buy his properties at the delinquent tax sale.
Don’t see how that’s a bad investment, just bad management.

brb lose 50% of your chit immediately, then child support/ spousal support.

I have a buddy who got divorced with three kids, $280 / month for each kid and he got off easy. dude lost his house in the divorce, and now has to live in a chit-hole $900/month one bedroom apt so he can make his ~$850 per month child support payments.

Here's a good one, $70k down the drain

    https://forum.bodybuilding.com/showt...hp?t=174908421

    Cliffs:

Foreign "property investment". I know personally lots of people that have been taken by scams like this.

These ones are in low income but beautiful countries (St. Lucia, Nicarauga, Haiti, etc). You pre buy (spec) a condo on the beach in these countries, not yet built. Often they have adjacent properties "already built by the same developer" to help with the con. Because its a third world country, things move differently, they drag you along for a couple years until you come to the realization that you're neither getting your retirement property nor your money back. A coworker in his 50s fell for a similar scam and dragged his girlfriend into it as well. Cost him I think $150k and her $50k as well as their relationship.

One was a development at a nearby lake. The developer was trying to raise capital for the development so the deal was you would buy an undeveloped lot for $60,000, this would help the developer finance the development, and when it was complete you had a $200,000 developed lot to do whatever you wanted to with. Land is still undeveloped 10 years later. Money is long gone.

    ^^
The above scam had been brought to me by a close friend of mine. I was *this* close to taking part into it but I spent some time thinking and realized an investing rule of thumb that I still live by today:

"Great investments are always found, never sold". Really, if there was an opportunity to make huge cash, why would a sane person not hoard all that opportunity to themselves.

    Lol.

Let's just say that if you consider personal relationships as investments that will help or hurt your bottom line you'll probably be successful financially. It's there more to life than finances?

Buying a new car for me was probably one of my worst financial mistakes.

Also getting invisalign when I was 18 and not wearing the retainer, so I'm having to do it again.

This, used cars when they are young and too broke to afford payments

Buying cars when you have a business or have enough capital to properly afford one is perfectly fine. Being a young kid and buying a depreciating asset is not the smartest choice.
