Of course. Stuff like pull ups, chin ups, push ups etc will build muscle. But it can't be the only thing.

To OP,
You need progressive overload, reps gradually turn into endurance therefore must be capped and weight must be increased.
It can be done with bodyweight through calisthenics, but the trade of is you basically also must learn the additional art of becoming a ninja.
Basically many folks throughout history just found a couple big rocks and went from there I believe, still do today.

Yes and know depending on the type of muscle and physique your after.
Look at competitive gymnasts they have pretty good physiques mostly just working their events pushing or pulling around their bodyweight.
Getting large like a competitive bodybuilder your probably not going to gain that kind of mass.
The trick is to use many variations of bodyweight and make them progressively harder.
Say for legs progress to a one legged squat or weighted pull ups or bar dips.
The weight can really be anything does not need to be a weight plate.
So the answer to your headliner question is yes along with proper diet(plenty of quality protein) and adequate rest for recovery.
Of course you need to be training intensely enough to stimulate muscle growth.
Ill add for bodyweight i personally like straps like TRX or other brands as they open up many movements you can do.
