Voting for a third party is pretty much equivalent to not voting as far as the outcome of that presidential election goes. Choosing to vote libertarian is a long term investment. The more votes we get the harder it is to ignore libertarian or libertarian leaning views and write off individualism in general as dead or insane.

After the election, the number of votes might matter, for funding, but also for pulling the major parties one direction or the other. A party losing votes to a third party is a party that has an incentive to shift towards those votes in policy. Gay rights, legalized marijuana and criminal justice reform are three areas with libertarians have undeniably made progress within the major parties.

The point of a third party is not just a feeble attempt to win elections, but also to force more scrutiny, and better leadership from the other two parties. And because this objective does not require us to put a president in the White House, every vote in every state counts, unlike Republican/Democrat votes outside of swing states which make little difference.
