Both Skater XL and Session kinda suck as skateboarding games

I have played both of them recently, I got Skater XL on my PC and I downloaded the Xbox trial of Session and both games just feel like tech demos at best. I guess like Skater XL feels like the more polished and complete game though, it doesn't have much to offer in the way of content but it at least it feels far better than Session does. Session just feels like some chitty indie attempt at making a video serious video game. There is barely any content, things glitch out all the time, and the game just feels like chit to play with the way your character instantly flops all ragdoll the second you bump into something, graze the side of something, or simply don't perform a trick perfectly on an obstacle.

Worst thing is the way both of these games simply aren't any fun for me. I have been skater most my life, I still enjoy skating around on occasion, and I have always had a lot of fun with skating games. Both of these games feel like they are trying to be more realistic than the Skate games and both feel like they are more frustrating and boring to play as a result. I actually played some Skate 1 and 3 on my Xbox One just to remind myself of what that game was like, and I was instantly having a blast with both of those games and they were very satisfying to play with no shortage of depth to be found. It's pretty sad when a game from 2007 can totally show up a game from 2020 but that's the case here. It's not even like these newer games look any better, I honestly thought the original Skate looked better most of the time simply because the animations and environmental interaction was so much better.

EA sucks for abandoning the Skate franchise. No phucking idea why they did that outside of just actively trying to be dicks, they can't have been unaware that a lot of people would have bought Skate 4 if they actually produced it...

Hopefully Session and Skater XL continue to improve, because they're our only hope. THPS remake 1+2 later this year will be really cool too, i'm looking forward to that.

Yeah it's kinda sad when a game from 2007 can totally show up games from 2020 but that's definitely the case here. I am sure Skater XL and Session will still continue to develop but right now they have very little too offer and you are better off just playing an old Xbox 360/PS3 game. Shows why being reliant on indie devs is just chitty, they take forever to get anything together and their games feel like tech demos for the longest time, and it's always a complete mystery if they will ever get to the state where they feel like complete games that actually work well. I am always hearing chit like "looks promising" and "hope it gets better" because it sure sucks right now.

Yeah I loved SSX, the games were fun as hell. The two best snowboarding games were always 1080 for the N64 and SSX 1 - 3. I miss having games like that in the spotlight and being able to experience them as new.

Alright guys, I finally got to play around with the THPS demo for a while and I really enjoyed it. I have played pretty much all versions of THPS, even the HD version they released on PS3/360 a while back, and this is pure classic THPS done right. The HD version never felt right to me, something about it, the physics, the way it played, just felt off to me. With THPS 1+2 they managed to get the physics feeling the way they should, and they even went so far to include THPS 1 controls and THPS 2 controls as an option. When I tried out the classic controls options they made the game play pretty much just like those original versions, with THPS 1 controls you don't have any revert or manuals and the tricks are same as you had in the original THPS, and with THPS 2 controls you have manual but no revert, and the tricks are all the same as it should be with that version.

The default setup is pretty much THPS 3 controls, you got manual and revert and you can link up huge combos with those. I think I played the demo 2 minute warehouse session about 10 times trying out every option and I managed to score some huge combos, pretty much managed to get right in the groove of things. By the time I stopped playing the demo I felt like this was something that I have been sorely missing for a long time now, and how it's pretty much the classic THPS experience remastered the way I always wanted it to be. The graphics are great looking, everything feels familiar yet it's just so much better looking and the animations are fantastic this time around, for example when you are grinding if you lean too much in one direction you can see your character move their arms around and make adjustments the way someone would if they were leaning like that, there's a lot of nice touches like that really bringing the game up to date from a visual standpoint.

I also tested out the various camera angles and the default setup is pretty much the standard camera angle they have always had. They also have a low and far angle which has the camera at the same distance but it's set more low or high, but what I really liked is the new near camera which gives you a camera that is a lot more like the EA Skate games, you can really appreciate the tricks and all the effort that went into the new animations with that angle. The sound is also great, I could hear Tony dropping a few lines when I bailed, all the effects are satisfying, and the soundtrack has some of the highlight tracks although I imagine the full version might have even more tracks. A nice touch they made is making it easy to skip a track at any time by pressing the R3 button, great for bypassing a track you don't like or skipping ahead to one you really want to hear. Overall I am very excited for this game and I think there is no doubt that they finally got the right developer to work on this game.

I tested out the controls with both analog and d-pad and it felt great both ways. I personally prefer playing it with the d-pad since that is how I always played classic THPS but when I used the analog everything seemed to respond the way it should and it probably gives you better control while just skating around as well. I don't think you will have any problems, they really nailed the controls with this one.

I made the transition from Dpad to analog when I went from PSX to Dreamcast

now on Xbone I think I'll stick with analog then

Yeah the Dreamcast versions were pretty much the ultimate versions as well as THPS 2X for the original Xbox until now. I am very hyped for this myself, the demo only confirmed how the hype is real and how they are actually doing the series justice for once. I liked how they also included THPS 1 and 2 controls since it makes the game feels like an authentic classic experience if you want it to be, which can be fun as an additional challenge. After a disappointing gen with absolutely nothing in the way of good extreme sports games I am finally getting the game I always wanted. Got it pre-ordred on Xbox since I got an Xbox One X.

Yeah they had Superman, don't know if it's got all the OG tracks as I just experienced the demo but it might. Definitely feels like classic THPS.

yeah they wanted to included all songs from THPS1 and THPS2 but there were licensing issues with some so these are not included, the ones from the list didn't have this issue so they're in the game

Yeah figures they would have some issues with licensing. I imagine the missing songs might have been charging a crazy amount of money for rights, you gotta remember how these games were originally released back in 1999 and 2000, it was a lot cheaper to get the license for songs in video games back then. Still it's amazing how they managed to get as many original tracks as they did. I doubt I will care for the new tracks but who knows, I'll have to check them out.
