    Bulk, Cut, or Recomp?

Hey all, I've been doing my best to keep my routine going without the gym - trying to figure out if my time working out at home is best spent bulking up or cutting?

I've never been very lean (especially not to the point of seeing my abs), and although this is a goal I wonder if I should be patient and focus on building more of a foundation of muscle. I'm curious if I would look good at this level of muscle mass cutting down to 10%, or if I should spend my time bulking up.

I can't seem to find a body fat percentage picture that looks like my situation, so I'm not sure if I'm above 15% or not, and should cut down? What do you all think?

    163 pounds

EDIT: last picture is a progress pic (first pic from a few years back) - other pics are current

Lean bulk, small cal surplus IMO. But it's a matter of preference of what you want to look like, so up to you.

Either way man. You could cut just to have a better buffer to lean bulk later on.

Thanks for the replies, everyone! Looks like I could probably go either way at this point. I might do a bit of a mini-cut for a month and then go for a lean bulk.

That mini cut is good idea. Since I switched to a 6 week lean bulk, 1 week maintenance (with a deload protocol) and 2 week ‘fairly agressive’ mini-cut (running up period to weights prior to my deload - I find that in two weeks you don’t really lose strength) protocol I’ve managed to gain a few pounds while keeping fat at the same level. So over a 9 week period my goal is to keep the same amount of fat (in lbs) while steadily increasing muscle mass, which in the long term will make it so that my % of bodyfat will drop.

I find this easier to sustain, both mentally and physically. Is it more optimal to commit to a long term lean bulk? Perhaps.. probably.. But if I can gain 2 lbs of lean mass every cycle I’m happy. That’s about 10-12lbs in a year while keeping a lean physique. I like the variety and my body seems to ‘reject’ long term over-eating.

    Hope this helps!
