Head of Lebanese General Security says that explosion was caused by explosives stored for years in the warehouse

Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr reporting from Beirut said the head of General Security, General Abbas Ibrahim, visited the site of the explosion and said it appears the explosion was caused by highly explosive material that was stored in a warehouse.
According to Ibrahim, the explosive material was confiscated years ago.
"We are at the entrance of Beirut's port, you can see behind me the chaos. Ambulances continue to arrive, continue to evacuate the casualties," Khodr said.
"So far according to security sources, at least 10 people have been killed, but we are expecting that number to rise because we understand from the health minister as well as the Lebanese Red Cross that there has been hundreds of injuries.

Supreme Defence Council recommends that army oversee security of disaster-stricken capital as fatalities pass 100.
Lebanese President Michel Aoun called for an emergency cabinet meeting on Wednesday and said a two-week state of emergency should be declared following a massive explosion in Beirut that killed at least 78 people and injured 4,000 others.
Officials said they expect the death toll to rise further as emergency workers dig through the rubble to search for survivors.
The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear. Officials linked the blast to some 2,750 tonnes of confiscated ammonium nitrate that were being stored in a warehouse at the port for six years.

The blast destroyed crucial grain silos at the port, which are thought to have stored around 85% of the country’s grain.
Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency quoted Raoul Nehme, the minister of economy and trade, as saying that all the wheat stored at the facility had been contaminated and couldn’t be used. However, he insisted Lebanon had enough wheat for its immediate needs. Nehme said Lebanon also would import more wheat.
Lebanon depends on imports for about 80% of its wheat supply, according to Associated Press.

So....it seems like the next World War is about to kick off in the Middle East. Israel has been bombing Syria for years now, and they have recently started stepping up their focused attacks on Iranian proxies. And Turkey looks like it's about to start throwing it's weight around even more.
Stay safe, Middle East brahs-and the world in general.
