For the sake of simplicity, we'll just say barefoot.

I always thought running shoes were a necessity, but this research journal is kinda interesting: http://www.barefootrunning.fas.harva...sionForces.pdf

Barefoot shoes like vibrams take months to fully utilise. But once you do you will never run with regular running shoes again.

Expect severe calf and feet doms everytime you use then for the first 2 months.

Spot on. Repped. Been running in Vibrams for 10 years now, no knee/mobility issues at all. But you have to transition into them. They got a bad rap because people would go full force on their first run and tear their calves apart. If you control your approach, you will benefit the rest of your life.

Now whenever I try to run in traditional cushioned shoes it's like torture.

Most running injuries (like the cliche bad knees) are from over cushioning in modern running shoes, it changes your foot strike and sends a shock wave through your body every time you take a stride. Barefoot/minimalist shoes are much better for your body in terms of biomechanics.

Yea I just got aweired on heel strike and forefoot strike. Haven't jogged or done any cardio for years and been on permabulk so this is an entirely new world to me. Decided to look into some rucking since gyms are closed and I need to train legs somehow.

Its so good to run in shame it takes so long to get the full distance. I did a half marathon in ultraboost but can only manage 8 or so miles and its been nearly one year. But worth it

I can't do the minimalist thing. I don't have any foot issues so I run in a neutral running shoe.

Don't know if you need them for rucking assuming a walking pace...I still wear regular shoes/sneakers for all lifting/walking regular activity. Wear the vibrams only specifically for running. They've changed the way I run though so even when I do run in regular shoes I find myself running as if barefoot...yeah toe vs heel strike is a major part of it. Try running barefoot, even a short distance at a slow pace - you'll land on your toes. Heel strikes are unnatural but are encouraged by the thick cushioned running shoes.

Might be why I don't have an issues with them - I run shorter distances. Think the longest run I ever went on was 7 miles. I run frequently for health/fitness, but never done even a half marathon. Usually in the 4-6 mile range.

Look, you need to think about the shoes you wear the rest of the time. Transitioning from heeled shoes in your daily life to zero drop shoes when you run is silly. There's a happy medium; I like New Balance 890. Fairly flat but not entirely.
