Don't rush it too much and make sure you buy the dlc's

Play it on 'Blood and Broken Bones' when you get the mechanics down otherwise it'll be too easy

Start it all over again, trust me, you'll enjoy it more then just hopping into the DLC'S and who knows, you might choose a different path then what you chose before

I found it hard to get into at first, and it wasn't clear what I was supposed to be doing from a contextual/story arc perspective if that makes sense.

You just sort of get dropped in and told to get on with it.

Maybe it didn't help that I'd not played the previous games.

Once you get to grips with it and start a few quests it gets better. And once you get to Novigrad the whole game opens up and I didn't look back.
