Sold my Mustang, bought an S2000, then sold that and bought this

    An old Mercedes...

Nothing crazy, just an 04 E55 AMG with 130k miles.

Even though I've only had it for only 3 days now, I can't stop driving it. Looking for any excuse to just take the AMG. I'm astonished with the level of technology and niceties that are available in such an old car. It's one of the cars that's been on my bucket list for the last couple of years.

    Pros:
    - has power just about everywhere in the RPM range
    - passing/acceleration is effortless
    - point in the direction where you want to be, press gas pedal, and you're there
    - air suspension is in good condition and works well

    Cons:
    - No manual (which is what's preventing me from considering keeping it long term)
    - brakes and steering feel like they were designed by Logitech, but they do the job

It is all stock at the moment. Has few dings here and there. Planning to do the E63 front bumper after catching up with all the maintenance.

(don't mind my #trackqueen RSX in the background)

Looks clean. These E55's even with the age and miles on them are still smooth as silk. The engine has like 500hp and with the supercharger it delivers it on tap.

Inb4 E55 manual transmission swap lol.

I was expecting you to go in a completely different direction based on the title. You went for comfort.

I was expecting it to be something like a Fiat Barchetta or Honda Fit. From my experience I have found the most modern and powerful cars can be a lot more boring after a while. The funnest cars tend to be small and without all the comforts. You feel like you are going a lot faster than you are and can make a fun ride of going to the store. The other cars you have to go to a race track or the Autobahn and even then unless you are stopping and starting a lot you get use to the speed.

It's not the type of car I'd normally go for and I didn't really know much about them until about a year ago. Then I went down the Youtube rabbit hole, started watching videos on them and what not, and ever since I've been occasionally browsing Facebook marketplace for one.

    cool...i guess...

the s2000 will be legendary one day when they're all but gone. E55 AMG is a nice car, a family member had an older one. My thing with bmw/mercedes is that they all look the exact same for the most part.

The easiest way would be using a custom flywheel and adapter plate between the engine block and the new manual transmission.

A custom length driveshaft might be needed. It looks like everything can be bought off the shelf that might work with the E55.

Transmission and bell housing appears to be sourced from a BMW and will use the stock clutch disc, pressure plate, release bearing, release fork and clutch slave cylinder.

Inside the car if it fits you can use race car style clutch/brake pedal assembly combo that has engine bay firewall mounted clutch and brake master cylinders.

Hard part would be when there's not a factory Mercedes automatic transmission hooked up to the factory ECU/TCU?

Does it throw a CEL/code, or will gauge cluster/navigation not work? The engine might not even start lol.

If your state has inspections the car will get scanned. Do you think the code/CEL will show and will it get flagged and not be street legal for new registration?

Nice buy! I'm a sucker for sleeper sedans. Those used to destroy stuff when they came out, Termi Cobra guys cried, e39 M5 guys couldn't keep up...Then the E63 came out and ruined it going NA (but the bumper was wayyy better looking so if I owned one I'd do the same)

Good to hear the air suspension is working right, I'm guessing it was replaced so that's a plus as back then owners said they failed at ~70k

I hear you on the chitty tranny, but it's good for those that like to mash the throttle and can't do anything else. Used to follow legitstreetcars on youtube, he had one and I think was an ex merc tech so he knew the little things these needed.

Matt Farah did a one take on a manual swapped black CLK430 4.3L V8.

Everything was swapped over from a wrecked Chrysler Crossfire including the pedals and half of the driveshaft.

It's got an exhaust on it also. Thick deep tone that sounds nice going through the gears on the up shifts and down shifts.

S2k was fun, but it's a very 'special occasion' car. it's a blast on backroads, but not very practical or enjoyable on the street/daily driving. with that said, if i had the space to store it, i would've definitely kept it. It was a Grand prix white.

ECU/TCU is the hardest part. Doesn't seem like there's a way to re-program the ECU so it's not looking for the TCU. From what I've seen so far there's only been one sorta-kinda swap by a Youtuber SK8215. He did a 350z transmission with custom adapter, but he uses standalone ECU.

That is in the plans. I think I have a cracked header, so might just use the excuse to upgrade.

Thanks man. It definitely scratches that primal part of the brain...when you just want to go fast in straight line. I've taken it to some backroads in the area and put transmission in manual mode...it's 'acceptable'.

Previous owner replaced the air suspension pump and couple of struts. He gave me the service records...and honestly looking at the numbers, I would've just deleted the whole system and gone with coil-over suspension. But it's working now.

And yeah, like 70% of the stuff I know about these cars came from LegitStreetCars lol.

Getting rid of the 5.0 wasn't easy, had a lot of fun with that car, but I felt I was kind of over it and wanted to try some other stuff. I sold it to my brother and still get to drive it from time to time. Sporty sedans are definitely nice...I'm thinking CTS-V in the near future.

A CTS-V is currently my front runner! I owned 2 of the N/A V's over the years and loved them.. the Supercharged models are just now starting to come down to a point I could pick one up easily paying cash. Only issue is finding one Miss Daisy drove to the piggly wiggly on Sundays and not one that somebody like me drove for a couple of years...lolz

That sucks you can't flash the factory ECU. If it could be done and not cause CEL from lack of TCU function the car would pass inspection once clutch starter interlock and reverse lights work.

I'm looking at some pictures of E55's. These cars aged great.

They look good lowered on the factory OEM wheels and black is a nice color for this car. Silver looks good also, but black I think looks the best IMO.

Another good looking model from this era is the CL55. It doesn't have a B pillar. When you roll down the front and back windows it opens up the cabin similar to older classic cars.

I've thought about buying one of those long ago. Probably wouldn't be able to afford the maintenance though. The air suspension goes out, so a lot of guys are going 3rd party or coilovers.

If you can work on cars yourself, then it's only half as expensive lol. Parts aren't too pricey since a lot of stuff is shared with other E class cars. Engine and transmission are fairly solid without too many issues like BMW or Audi of that age, for example. And the engine bay isn't too crammed to the point where you have to remove the engine to do some things (i.e. B5 S4). Air suspension can be iffy...aftermarket air springs are about $500 each, which isn't too terrible, but I think I'd do coilover conversion before I pay for that and then have to replace others eventually.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit softly.
