Low(ish) Vitamin D even with sunlight and supplementation

My serum VitD came back right on the lower threshold of the ref range (29.9).

For the past several months I have been taking 1000iu daily in addition to getting 30-90min of outdoor time daily, in most cases with at least some sunshine.

What I’m curious about is whether or not a lower body weight (either now or recently sustained for a long time) could effect this, given it is a fat soluble vitamin. I have been gaining weight steadily for several months and am now technically in the medically ‘normal’ BMI range, though still about 20lb below what I’d consider ‘normalized’ for me.

    Thanks.

Seems strange really that your getting sun and still low. the last time I had blood work done I was right at the top of range, but I take 4000iu per day. Haven't had blood work done in years now, but if it was working then, I'm assuming I'm still good.

IIRC, Adam is in Seattle, so not really a lot of sun. Still, that's a lot of outdoor time.

What is your latitude where you live?

That said, I just reviewed the literature on this, and I wouldn't be concerned at all with your level being where it is. I don't recall seeing low levels associated with lower body weight, though I haven't looked directly (low levels are associated with elevated body weight).

    Take more than 1 drop. I take 5 sometimes 10 a day.
    Sometimes none.

I live in Seattle, but again recently i've been getting a good amount of sun on top of the 1000IU's.

Thanks for the info, I always thought having levels closer to 50 was much better.

Isn't 1000IU's on the very low-end range for supplementation? I figure with it being fat soluble and you being very lean, you wouldn't require as much but also wouldn't retain or absorb as much.

I'm not sure though, that's just what makes sense to me.

Have you tested low for it before?

OTC Vit D supplements are very low dosed. I think if you need to make a real difference in your vit D levels (for people who are deficient) you would normally be prescribed supplements many, many times more potent

Some people just don't seem to produce a lot of vitamin D from sunlight exposure for whatever reason. Latitude and overlying ozone (I think) also makes a difference. In Seattle you should be able to get some in the summer months. Taking supplements with a source of fat in theory is helpful.

From a dosing standpoint, it's thought that up to 4,000 IU daily is completely safe. Some people do mega dose vitamin D once a week or once a month, but considering the half life of vitamin D more frequent dosing makes more sense to me. D3 supplements are thought to be more beneficial than D2 supplements (D3 are more common). That said, there really isn't any strong evidence at all that levels above 30 ng/mL (which is 75 nmol/L) are beneficial. The vast majority of the evidence actually shows no additional benefit from what I have seen.

very interested in whether bf plays a role in the vitamin absorption, that would be an intriguing effect

Pretty sure the exposure/vitamin D absorption problem for most people has to do with the actual receptors themselves. They are being exposed to the same amount and taking in the same amount as someone else, but can't really use it properly.

Is your supplement vegan? Aren’t most vegan supps d2? Any intestinal issues? Wasn’t there an uptake issue in regards to intestinal issues similar to b12 and factor x?

No im not a vegan... but again I take a supplement for D3, so im not sure why that matters. They ADD d3 to dairy, so it's basically the same thing.

If you scroll down and read the critiques conclusion it says while its technically true the amount you reabsorb is so insignificant it doesn't really matter

As Heisman said, some people's bodies are really inefficient at synthesizing Vitamin D. It's largely genetic. I had low Vitamin D when I lived in NYC despite being outside all the time & even tanning once per week didn't elevate it. I think being very lean may've played a role for me but I also think it's genetic because I have olive skin. Whatever the case, it cleared up entirely when I moved to LA & now my levels are totally normal without supplementation. I'd imagine that even in the summer in Seattle it might still be hard to get enough sun if you need as much sun exposure as I do.

I do get a good amount of sun at the moment... my only real 'cardio' is that I walk outside for about 6 miles every day, half of the time it's in the sunnier hours... and I also golf on the weekend one day which often provides a lot of sun, too.

I'm not too worried about it, was just surprised that it wasn't a bit higher since I've actively been trying to get outside more.

The doc I was mentioning is Fuhrman (as usual with me) and his point isn't that you shouldn't shower but that you should supplement ( ideally with the vitamins he sells, I guess).

    I know right.

    Dam that virus

Unfortunately many good food places will not reopen

That Montys invested huge $$ on remodeling only to have our weak AF Mayor close down everything

So phuk up thousands of lives over a virus that’s mild AF in most people

    Ok I’m done lol
