My understanding has always been that there's some evidence they may prevent you spreading the disease if you have it, but do nothing to stop you contracting it. They're not. They just give you a false sense of security. The masks that would help are in short supply because they are being used by medical personnel. They're also hugely uncomfortable and impractical. It's time we stop this mask charade and get back to building herd immunity, as we should've in the first place.
