Angry Why does the Left hate Nuclear Energy (Fission)

Why does the Left equate Fossil Fuels with Nuclear Reactors? How are they equal? You want nothing but wind energy from turbines? Are we supposed to fuel our homes with potatoes??!

Nuclear energy is very efficient and seems to be a great source of power but we still don't have a good way of dealing with nuclear waste. None of the processes are without their drawbacks

We’ll never be able to rely on chit like wind for our overall energy requirements. No combination of renewables + storage will be able to provide the reliable energy we require now much less in the future if we have any hope of larger-scale electric vehicle adoption

Nuclear is the only real option at this point, and we’re still talking decades of decommissioning / replacing existing plants. We’ll be lucky to see truly meaningful progress in our lifetimes, we’re still fukn working on going from coal -> natty gas

Allegedly if we went for full nuclear fission power supply we would be out of usable uranium in five years.

He’s talking about “viable” uranium, referring to economic viability in the same way we treat “proven” oil reserves: they’re not counted unless extracting the resource makes financial sense. Widespread adoption, government incentives, and technological tweaks can have a huge impact on viability

There are other holes to poke in his assessment but I’ll just leave it at that

The amount of physical space that solar panels and magic fans would take up does not make that transformation possible.

This isn't true. France recycles a good amount of their nuclear waste. Sure you can't get rid of all of it, but we're more than capable of storing the waste until it's finally decayed enough

It's because of the word "nuclear"

The premise of the question is wrong. It's not a left vs right issue.

First strike against nuclear is simple economics. Take a look at the chart below:

This shows the Levelized Cost of Electricity, or the cost of producing energy vs the amount of energy produced over a source's lifetime. Nuclear is more expensive than everything but offshore wind and biomass, in the same range as coal. Solar, natural gas, and conventional wind power are far less expensive than nuclear. No matter what your politics, nuclear has become a poor economic investment.

BigDeeps01 is partially correct. Technically, we CAN store nuclear waste as long as we need to, and technically, we CAN recycle it. I spent 18 years of my career working on nuclear waste storage. I was involved in characterizing the Yucca Mountain site in Nevada as a permanent repository for spent fuel. There's no doubt in my mind that it can be stored safely. The drawbacks come down to cost and political will. Disposal of nuclear waste, whether by recycling or spent fuel underground storage, is extremely expensive. It's labor intensive, and requires a commitment of many generations.

Politically, again, it's not a matter of left vs right. It's not liberal vs conservative. It's not big government vs small government. Nobody wants it. NOBODY. In Nevada, there was about 90% opposition to the repository project, and that opposition came equally from Republicans and Democrats. They might disagree with each other on just about every other issue, but they always agreed in their opposition to Yucca Mountain. And Yucca Mountain is as good a site as you'll find anywhere in the world.

There was a proposal to store it in Utah. Utah opposed it overwhelmingly, both majority Republicans and minority Democrats. Texas opposed hosting it. There was a formation in New Hampshire that seemed to have potential. It was universally opposed there. Washington State and Idaho both rejected proposed sites.

In 2008, Nevada's Harry Reid agreed to support Obama over Hilary if he promised to shut down the Yucca Mountain project. He did that in 2009. If it was a Republican vs Democrat issue, one would think that Trump would have eagerly restarted it after he was elected, considering his eagerness to undo everything Obama has done. A lot of people expected him to. He didn't. The governor of Nevada at the time was a Republican, and there was no way he would allow that to restart.

Not every issue is partisan. NIMBY is often a far more powerful consideration.
I'm out, standing in my field.

    64 and still a newbie.
