Wonder how the law sees this. On one hand he purposely hit 2 people, on the other hand they were on the freeway which is illegal. Both actions are illegal but which one prevails? I know if you run over a drunk person on the freeway accidentally, you'll be fine.

I mean you aren’t normally allowed to plow into someone doing something illegal on the higher. Driver’s probably in trouble for hit & run at least? Maybe if he stopped or looked concern he could better argue it was an accident.

Im assuming the city/police closed it and implemented their own barriers by blocking entrance ramps...which would explain why the highway was empty

It appears that the vehicle entered the wrong way up an on ramp, avoided police which had closed down I-5, swerved around support vehicles, and speeded up as it charged at protesters. Aftering hitting several people, it slowed down, before speeding off when confronted by protestors.

Washington State Patrol has confirmed that the driver has now been detained and is being questioned.

4AM UPDATE: At a 4am press conference, Washington State Patrol said that impairment was not a factor. It appears the car entered the wrong way on the freeway onramp before circling around and speeding up to strike protesters. The driver is facing possible hit and run, and vehicular assault which may be upgraded as questioning continues.
