This is disappointing and a big missed opportunity if true. What the team should do is look in to the Native American history of the region and the tribes that lived there and pick a team name based on that history. That way they stay true to their historical name with the fans but spin it in to a positive light. It's not a coincidence that the US Army for example name all their helicopters after tribes and allocated the most powerful warrior tribes to their most deadly gunships: Blackhawk, Kiowa, Apache, Comanche, etc. There's a lot of powerful history of the Algonquin and Iroquois warriors from that exact region. With the right consultations and imagery Washington could have a seriously badass new team with strong ties to the local community that starts positive conversations about Native American history.
