@skier! - I've been collecting sports cards, off-and-on for the past 25+ years. In the past 5 years or so, I've been attempting to build a PSA/BGS slabbed NBA rookie personal collection. Obviously, in the past 6-12 months, many of the NBA cards specifically have exploded in price...Luka, Zion, Lebron, Tatum, Giannis and even many vintage cards (not to mention the insane prices of boxes and wax).
I honestly don't know what exactly caused this...or if it was a perfect storm of a lot of things...COVID, gov't stimulus, "The Last Dance", Gary V, etc. I'm curious if you have any thoughts/opinions on if this "bubble" will pop any time soon and we'll see a drop in prices, or if this trend will carry on into 2021?

Well I just won this auction. He's wearing a Duke jersey, not a Pelicans jersey. It says "No. 1" on the back of the card, so I'm assuming there's only 1? Not sure how much it will be worth in the future, but at least I got one. Lulz. Thanks for the tip!

the 1 in this case is not referring to production number. it's referring to its order in the set. usually a 1 of 1 will have like a serial number effect or look; so as to illustrate the produciton numbers. for instance, the one you got may have a variation in a different color (parallel) and then it would be numbered to a lower production number
your # just refers to the fact that he's the first card in the set

Why did LeBron's rookie card sell for $1.8 million? Do basketball cards give you the most ROI?
The reason I'm asking is because I researched some baseball cards like Griffey Jr. whose best card is apparently only worth a few grand. Even Babe Ruth's rookie card is only worth around $45K.
Then you have NFL players like Barry Sanders whose RC is just a few hundred dollars. Peyton Manning just below one thousand...
Basketball cards seem to have the most value. MJ rookie cards are at least $25K. Even Zion is going for $15K and above.*Fulfilling My Destiny Crew*

That's kind of a loaded question, and cadetduke would be a much better candidate to answer because he is a dealer and runs a shop and I'm just an old school collector.
But the Lebron value (1.8 million) was due to the rarity of the card. Only 23 produced (due to his jersey number being 23) and obviously signed and only a few in circulation. I believe only 18 of the 23 cards are accounted for in the world. So all that drives the price up.
The key factors in the value of a card are condition (obviously being the shape the card is in) and the print run number. They make 50 million of them (like the Ken Griffey Jr. 1989 Upper Deck that they were still printing in 1990, lol) isn't going to be worth nearly as much of a card that is 1 of 10 or 1 of 5 or something like that. Then factor in the performance of the player, demand of the brand of card, etc.

Na. Baseball is and will always be king. Next year basketball will be garbage compared to right now. Baseball is always hot. Same goes for most valuable cards. I don't even want to carry football in my store. Hockey I carry because that's my sport and upper deck gives me product to sell. You might have Zion and Morant right now but you'll always have a hot baseball prospect that's going for thousands of dollars every year before they drop off people's radars for what seems like forever lol You look for generational talents. Hockey is even hot for that right now because in 2015-16 you had McDavid and now this year you'll have Alexis Lafreniere. Two "generationals" in a 5 year span. And I think beckett either lost or just don't want to let me know they have my alexis card I sent in a month ago lol.
This just sold for 105K. But I fuking hate PWCC because they shill bid.
I'm in the middle of a raid so don't have time to look up comps lol
