No **** we've tested more than other countries - we're the United States, son. I am not comparing the US testing to other countries, derp. What I stated is a demonstrable fact. If you want to do what's best for the United States, we need to test more than we currently are to keep the sick away from the healthy. That's my focus; you can keep derping about other countries.

Derp... who's talking about shutdowns? Testing. Get people tested and isolate the sick. It's not rocket science. 0.3% of 500 million = 1.5 million.

You are left between two bad choices: 1. Economic depression, 2. Dead (mostly seniors) folks.

Number 1 screws everyone, healthy and unhealthy, young and old, poor and wealthy, white and black. Number 2 overwhelmingly screws people who are unfortunately sick and old.

    Do the math.

I am sorry but people will not live forever anyways. The elderly volunteered to work around the nuclear reactors in Japan after the tsunami because they lived a long life, meanwhile some of our elderly have the opposite attitude. Look man, I know it sounds messed up, but if you 70 and up, chances are that something will get you regardless. But with a complete economic lockdown you are endangering the livelihoods of tens of millions of people, throwing people's lives in the dump, starving families, divorce rates going up, and bankrupting the youth. If I was 70 and up, I'd thank the lord for the time he has given me and be at peace if I happen to die from literally ANYTHING. You won't live forever.

The flu's mortality rate is 0.1%. The population of the United States is 330 million, not 500 million. 0.1% of 330 million = 330k. According to your very scientific calculation the flu should kill 330k Americans every year, when in reality is only kills around 60k (with no shutdowns, social distancing etc.). What an absurd equation. It's much more complicated than the junk stats you're pulling from thin air.

Also if Trump is "failing" at testing then I don't know what you consider a success. The only thing we currently have as barometer for the rate of testing is in relation to other countries. You have no clue what you're talking about and keep moving the goalposts by saying "there needs to be more." No, chit. It would be great if every country could magically test every person every day, but that isn't feasible. You can't "isolate the sick" with a virus this contagious that exhibits very mild to asymptomatic features. All you can do is take preventive measures and move on with your life.... Or not. Stay at home forever if you want to.

While you are fundamentally right, this whole lockdown chit is a bogus attempt at bringing down the economy.

They want to bring down the economy among other things to use it as an arguing point against the president.

Its disgustingly sad that they want to make everyone suffer and miserable because they're having a president tantrum.

This is the dumbest thing I've read so far. Why are you comparing yearly flu stats to a novel virus that is far more contagious than the flu and has killed 450K in 5 months, and 120K of those in America alone?

This summer will be filled with more and more families saying "screw it, we're going on a trip" and spreading from city to city, state to state.

    gonna be interesting...

2 months until schools open back up. I'll be likely teaching in the inner city area, but I can't imagine how we will be at school full time ,40+ hrs a week. will likely be hybrid of online and in person classrooms. Gonna be a mess. These kids are gonna lose their minds
Just trying hard to not be a fat sack-o-chit.

Because you decided to extrapolate the morality rate of the Coronavirus to an arbitrary population of 500m and assumed every single one of those people would get infected and die at that exact same rate. To be fair though that isn't much worse of a calculation than many of the models that predicted millions dead by the end of the summer even with social distancing.

The Coronavirus has killed far more people in one cycle because:

    1) It's a new strain of virus that nobody has developed any sort of immunity to compared to the common flu
    2) It's far more contagious and made it's way into unsuspecting nursing homes where it wreaked havoc

Your solution seems to test everyone frequently and contact trace, which won't be feasible any time soon. No large country has been able to implement this sort of system to any great degree of success yet. It's either panic and broad lockdowns or riding it out like Sweden.

Typical R&P. Love to try to politicize everything. If you want to talk Red vs. Blue, remind me again which state has the most deaths? How about this list of the most deaths per 1M of population:

    New York
    New Jersey
    Connecticut
    Massachusetts
    Rhode Island
    DC
    Louisiana
    Michigan
    Illinois

Pretty much the same for total cases per 1M population. Which are red and which are blue?

Totally wrecked by a virus with a quarter of a percent mortality rate.

OP has tested positive for SOYLEN-19. Symptoms include extremely low test, shrinking testicals, micropenis, cravings to suck cawk, and making stupid threads on the Misc. There is no cure or treatment.

You can use the figure. Just don't make insert it into faulty calculations and expect to get an accurate result.

Again, that's why it's called a novel virus, so why are you comparing it to the flu?
I compared it to the flu because it's another widespread virus we regularly deal with and it has a mortality rate of 0.1%. I plugged that number into your little math equation to prove how flawed it is.

So just let 'er rip because in your mind mass testing isn't feasible? Okay...
Mass testing might be feasible in the future, but it isn't at this moment. Testing is expanding worldwide, but no nation has been able to produce tests or a system sufficient to test anyone, anywhere, anytime.

I suppose you're against masks, too?
Not against masks, it doesn't hurt to wear them, but it also shouldn't be state mandated. Not sure what we're even arguing anymore. Take care.

As long as those states health care systems can handle it and hospitals aren't getting completely overwhelmed, they can proceed with re-opening. People should also wear masks out of courtesy and respect social distancing as feasibly as possible. There are going to be spikes no matter what, unless we never leave our homes again.

I was absolutely for the initial lockdowns, especially here in NY since this state was hit extremely hard and there was still a ton of uncertainty and unknowns about the virus. The lockdowns were the correct decision. But the narrative quickly went from "lock down so hospitals don't get overwhelmed" to "lock down until the virus goes away", and seemed to be remaining that way up until the George Floyd protests and rioting started a couple weeks ago.

I compared it to the flu because it's another widespread virus we regularly deal with and it has a mortality rate of 0.1%. I plugged that number into your little math equation to prove how flawed it is.

Mass testing might be feasible in the future, but it isn't at this moment. Testing is expanding worldwide, but no nation has been able to produce tests or a system sufficient to test anyone, anywhere, anytime.

Not against masks, it doesn't hurt to wear them, but it also shouldn't be state mandated. Not sure what we're even arguing anymore. Take care.
I'm not arguing. I just find that you calling out fuzzy math while using fuzzy math is, well, fuzzy.

Once again, flu virus and novel virus, particularly an emergent one, is not even close to the same thing, hence the difficulty in figuring this thing out.

Nah, not mad at all. I just hate ad hominems—if someone uses one I’ll always retort.

Plus, if he’s claiming someone is a low-test soyboy, he better be able to show that he at least can put his test to use. That height probably doesn’t cut it, unfortunately.

It reminds me of this time I was on a jobsite that had WAY too many safety personnel on it. I was wearing a light flourescent blue polo shirt. It was loud as fuk, so I didn't bother putting my vest on. Just walking around (the building was over 1M square ft) at least 5 safety people flagged me down in their little buggies...from hundreds of feet away. "You aren't wearing your vest!" Mind you, on this jobsite the field guys would wear yellow or orange t-shirts that were so dirty you could barely see them. But they couldn't wrap their heads around the idea that I was wearing high visibility blue instead of orange or yellow. I'm like "dude, you saw me from over a 100 yards away in this loud ass shirt, and you come over here to tell me its not high visibility?"
