    Mom needs to lose weight 5”4 260 pounds ....

    How many calories a day is healthy My
    Mom finally agreed to get her to lose weight for her health as she is older (52 years) anyone have an idea of how much calories I told her 1500 she thinks she will starve...lol....I looked up nitro system but worried it won’t work I know about calories in vs out, all that stuff but can’t monitor her she drinks sodas like no tomorrow
    Just been worried about her health should I try nutrisystem or weight watchers anyone try with success .... please lmk or input ...she doesn’t workout at all she’s a nurse has crazy shifts no time she claims

    Unfortunately, this was my first thought as well.
    She has to want to do it for it to work.

    1500 would be too low to start. Yes, that would put her in a deficit, but she'd last about a day and a half. It's going to be hard enough to get her to stick with any plan at all so you need to make it as palatable as possible.

    Without knowing her at all I believe she would lose on 2000, but it's a good starting point. I guarantee she's eating over that now; probably just in soda.

    Work up a 2000 calorie daily meal plan with lots and lots of variety. Most people quit because they get bored with a routine. Mix it up, give lots of food options that she likes but keep it at 2000 cals per day. The rest is up to her to stary on that plan.

    Give her a few sodas because she'll be pissed without them; unless she agrees to cut them out too. Explain to her that if she did, it would give her far more food to eat and satisfy her far better using those soda calories for food calories.
    Man, she'd feel so much better too!

    Thank you ....I used an app for her and it said to eat 1800 for her to lose weight cI know she eats probably 4,000 calories and drinks 6 sodas a day AT least she doesn’t like vegetables like broccoli or green beans so it’s hard to force her to eat that stuff because I told her she needs to eat higher fiber and less steaks she eats steak and macaroni 3 times a week I found her these tortilla wraps to eat with grilled chicken and they only have 50 calories and 11 grams fiber per wrap what else is high in fiber that’s not green and low calories that can fit into 1800 cal a day? Any ideas I know she’s impossible but want her to be more healthy so she can live longer !

    Remember, she doesn't have to eat "healthy" to lose weight; two different scenarios. You can gain weight on broccoli if you ate over your TDEE in it every day.

    Her weight control would be the first hurdle I'd face. Let her eat anything she wants as long as it's ~1800-2000 cals per day. If she sticks with that and makes some progress, she'll naturally fall into healthier foods later on.

    Again, make it as easy on her as possible to start.

    Start with some small changes that are realistic for her to actually do. 1500 is very low and she's gonna hate it and quit. Take some baby steps like getting her to switch from those sodas to water etc.

    Not lower than 2000 to start.

    She’s very heavy so she might even be able to lose on higher cals actually.

    I’d start at 2200 and try that out for two weeks. If she’s steady losing then stay there as long as possible. If not then adjust down.

    As to sodas just have her switch to diet.

    As to food choices I don’t think you should restrict her. Just have her add up the total on MFP and stop eating at 2200.

    In the end though all you can do is suggest it. It’s her own choice whether she actually wants to do it.

    You can’t change people, all you can do is give suggestions and then see what she decides to do herself.

    You want her to be healthier, she does not. Address this issue first or you will make no progress. It has to come from her, she has to want it.. truly want it.

    Im going to have to agree with the second post above.
    You have good intensions to help her but she herself has to have some motivation and discipline to want to do it.
    The only way your going to find out the calories where she neither loses or gains is actually and accurately write down the calorie intake and macros.
    That can be to much to do for some.
    You suggestion about nutri system or weight watchers may be better for her at least for a short time to get in the swing of things.
    They are simple and give you the foods according to your weight you give them.
    Activity needs to increase also.
    As nurse she probably walks a lot but it has to go beyond her daily activity as extra activity.
    Walk more,ride a bike swim,things like that.

    1200 is the bare minimum (minus random dips lower than that) for anyone, 1500 isn't that bad. But I agree with other people, she doesn't sound like she wants to, so she probably won't. It's unfortunate, especially since she's a nurse and likely knows and sees what staying that overweight does to people. If she does end up deciding she wants to do this, starting off at a higher calorie intake that would still help her lose is advisable. Making drastic changes rarely stick (though I know it does work for some people). Doing little things, like switching to diet soda and cutting out extra servings of sweets or something along that line are more likely to stick long term. Dropping to 1500 calories a day suddenly and eating a strict diet most likely won't help, it'll just make her give up and not want to try again later.
