What I have seen is cloth and paper masks (if even worn properly) will only filter out very large droplets. These would fall to the ground pretty quickly on their own. So masks are really doing nothing.

Increased risks can come from if a mask catches someone elses large particle and then goes on to aerosolize it. Not sure how realistic that thought is....

Given aerosolized particle size, most all science of viruses similar size show masks dont do anything.


I wear one just because I am not looking to present issues. But if at some point this begins to go too far I may feel the need to be vocal about it. For now, I am of the mindset that is 'cant hurt', but firmly believes it is doing about as much as wearing garlic around your neck to stave off vampires.

There is plenty of research that demonstrates their effectiveness, it’s really not even arguable that they help reduce respiratory secretions of the wearer of the mask. Microbes are “sticky” in the sense that they “plate out” easily and adhere to surfaces (aside from some encapsulated bacteria, certain fungal spores, and weaponized pathogens). The masks probably help the wearer to some degree, but not as much as they help keep the user’s secretions from becoming aerosolized. Large droplets drop out of the air quickly which is where we get our 6’ distancing recommendations. Airborne virus in bio-aerosols you would be better with 6 meters (if not more) since they can hang in the air for longer and are easily affected by minuscule air currents, wafting them along.

There is a potential for increased risk for the wearer of masks resulting from user error. There is no doubt about that. Either allowing the interior of the mask to become contaminated before putting directly over your face, or by having the exterior contaminated and inoculating yourself through indirect transmission. Masks work though as a mitigation method. They are not a prevention device or PPE. I don’t even consider N95s as PPE for virus because they are 95% effective for .3 micron particles, this virus is like .06 so it could make it through the mask and you can never get a really good face seal with N95s. You literally need to bring your own air in a postive pressure mask for true protection. A PAPR respirator, followed by cartridge type air purifying respirator with a p100 cartridge would also be considered PPE for respiratory protection for respiratory pathogens but still less effective than SCBA.

Masks help a good bit when everyone is wearing them, and people understand how to use them. I don’t believe that this particular virus justifies mandatory use of them at this time. It’s a lot to ask for little reward. That sounds horrible, but the fact is most of the deaths are in people on borrowed time due to other conditions and many of the statistics are people who died with COVID rather than from COVID. If I was over 65 and had co-morbidities my opinion might be different. But probably not, I’d take it upon myself to protect myself rather than attempting to rely on everyone else to protect me through their actions, but that’s just how I am.

Thanks for posting, i wanted to do church but not sure how many people they are allowing in at 1 time on a Sunday service.
I have done the risky haircut, the super risky gym,and shaking hands with friends, oops!
We cancelled our trip to AZ, and skipped the wedding on the 12th(120 people)

I don't know about celebrities, but I think in general, characterizing the wearing of masks as an ego trip, is just a self centered projection from self centered people. The reality is just the opposite, an example of anonymity.

Where I live, public transport (subway, bus, train, taxi etc) it's required to wear a face covering. In a big store like Walmart (called "Asda" here) or Tesco it's recommended that people wear a face covering but not required by law or by the stores.

As time goes on I see very few people going to a big store wearing masks, 1 person in 20 perhaps? And seems to be gradually decreasing.

I'm methodical about hand and shopping cart handle sanitising but I only rarely wear a mask. However if I needed to make a subway journey, even if wasn't required, I'd wear a mask and disposable gloves

where I live it's not at all unusual to see someone walking to the store (to buy cigarettes) wearing their pajamas/dressing gown or t shirt and slippers etc at any time of day. Not sure what tests you've got but a lot of people here would fail them. Like ants seem fairly immune to nuclear fallout, smokers are much less likely to contract Covid, so people here will be survivors.

Like I said, I don't know about celebrities (especially the people that earn a living by pretending to be something they're not). I'll add something else that I don't know about; social media sites. I'll take your word on it that users post pictures of themselves with masks on. I don't know the motive, but it sounds more like people just goofing around.

554,000 thousand deaths worldwide out of a world population of 7.6 billion. That is a .007% death rate. Thousandth percentile. And we know the 554K number is inflated. Now, detractors to this will say that the death rate is underreported. So show me some evidence that it is higher. The virus is real, but, it is hardly the Spanish Flu. P.S. I've also read about smokers being less likely to get the virus. I've also read that it's much more serious for those that do, though.
