Do you think in general police abuse their power?

As a whole, do you believe they do? Do you believe police aren't held accountable for improper decisions?

Genuinely curious what % of people here believe that. No judgement. Just curious.

As someone who does the job I will say not all, but there exists those who do. As a whole? No.

Not once have I written a citation out of spite, or made an arrest swayed by my emotions.

I do my job impartial and objective, I treat everyone I meet exactly the same whether you’re a convicted felon or a 90 year old grandma who’s never been in trouble.

My kindness gets taken advantage of on occasion but when it comes down to it I do what needs to be done. Anytime I have made a mistake I was always upfront about what happened and addressed it with my coworkers and supervisors.

It’s pretty clear this is going to turn in a police hate thread with no advocates for those who share my opinion cause it’ll be like talking to a brick wall.

But to answer your question, in “MY” experience I have always seen people I work with try to educate other officers on what we can and cannot do. An uneducated police officer is a liability for all involved the amount of tenure makes no difference. And as a result we have the situation nationwide we are in now.

My coworkers have always been quick to point out “hey we can’t do that” or “that’s unlawful”

I responded to a “Officer in Emergency” call once. A psychotic man wrestled with one of my coworkers in the middle of the street and tried taking his gun. After he was subdued and in cuffs he still tried fighting. However, I can tell my coworker was still amped up and almost used unreasonable force. We stopped and calmed him down before that happened. But it’s understandable when that person in cuffs was just trying to kill you.

A lot of people can say blanket statements about what they think about police but until they’ve done the job they don’t know what it’s like.

I’m not a “thin blue line” advocate. Policing like any other profession is just a job to me, a means to an end. And that allows me to look at it with objective eyes. Yes there are officers who abuse their power

My department is entirely transparent and posts publicly about these officers and the nature of the violations. We can’t hold a good relationship with the community unless we show citizens what happened.

OIS’s, criminal charges, officer misconduct, it’s all posted publicly.

Here in the UK the state gives them too much power anyway, regardless of whether they abuse it or not.

As a "liberal" miscer, not all cops are bad. But there is some chitty cops who take advantage of their power.........Yet the "good" cops don't tell them anything or keep them in check. They just let them continue their chitty antics and nobody says anything to them. Cops protect other cops. "Good" cops don't hold other bad cops accountable when they do something racist, abuse their power, or do illegal cop stuff.

And this is why people say "All cops are bad". Althought "good" cops don't do anything bad, they help perpetuate the broken system that allows "bad" cops to abuse their power.

Yeah, any group with power also tends to have a certain set of rules for themselves and a separate set for you.

Politicians get away with insider trading, police aren't charged with crimes they commit on and off the job, judges and others in the legal community use their influence to get reduced punishment for their family members, members of the military turn a blind eye to misconduct from their peers, etc etc

So why does it happen seemingly every time? That's the #1 issue, imo. When a teacher gets caught molesting a child, the other teachers don't circle and wagons and try to blame the child for being too sexy.

How many cases of this have we seen on the misc over the years?

Yet, do you see anyone rallying and rioting in the streets saying all teachers are child molesters?
No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.

Thanks for the response. And thanks for helping out your local community, even if it is just a job to you.

Let see an example Singapore, a nice first world country, a nice economy and etc. But try not to "walk" in a straight line and you will see what police brutality and heavy-handed tactics really mean, no matter of yours race or religion

Because teachers don't protect the criminals in their ranks like cops, priests, bankers, etc. That's why those professions have such a bad rep - the internal culture of protectionism.

Framing it the way I do I think is best, because it keeps you from developing an unhealthy obsession with the profession. I don’t believe in the “Us vs. Them” mentality and unfortunately it does exist.

For the sake of my own mental health, I do the best “I” can do everyday. So you’ll forgive me if I take offense if people group me with a cold-blooded murderer or negligent fool.

When I myself am genuinely trying to help people.

if you see cops do some phucked up chit at your job, do you speak out against them? Do others do the same? I'm genuinely asking about the culture.

Somewhat related; I was watching this snowman scare prank, everyone laughs it off or whatever but look at the reaction of the cops at 3:50, absolutely pathetic
