    But muscle can't be built out of fresh air. I know you mentioned protein, but "maintenance" equals the number of calories your body needs to stay the same, not the number it needs to grow.

    But let’s say you get enough protein and you’re eating at a deficit

    Wouldn’t your body just burn the fat at the same time as building muscle ?

    I’m not sure if this is correct or backed by science it’s just been able to work for me

    All assuming you have a decent amount of body fat say 15 percent and higher

    Yes, that's know as recomping. There's nothing wrong with that, but as far as I'm aware it tends to work better in untrained individuals or those with a lot of fat to lose. I think after a certain point it becomes a lot slower than a bulk/cut cycle, or so I've heard

    If I recall correctly, you're not a lifetime natty. That makes a difference.

    OP, the best diet is the one that you can stick to. The most common sense way to lose weight is to eat in a deficit (250-500 cals) and exercise.
