Ever say "Long time no see"? That's a problem.

I read this article the other days in the 'news'. I have to admit it irritated me. Basically the guy is pointing out the 'problematic' origins of various phrases, which is not news but whatever. What pissed me off though, is the implication that this is something we should be concerned about. I would have thought that it's simple logic: if something no longer means what it used to me, then that it doesn't mean that thing anymore...it means what it currently means.

Anyway saying "long time no see" and "Stan" is problematic, along with a bunch of other things. Not calling someone a "queer" seems obvious but the author seems to think that a younger gay person might not want to label themselves as queer around older gays in case it triggers homophobic PTSD or something. Saying "Karen" is wrong, because it might have originated as an African-American term or something. It's not clear why that makes it wrong, but the author is concerned because of course he is.

Then he signs off with "always check your privilege", successfully steaming my piss a second time. Who the fuk is this kunt to tell me to check anything? What a condescending wanker.

    EDIT

For some reason I can't post the link, site keeps rejecting the post. Google "if you knew the origins of these common slang words" for the original article, published a few days ago in ABC news. Journalist is called Gary Nunn. If someone else can post it, that would be great.

“Many religions now come before us with ingratiating smirks and outspread hands, like an unctuous merchant in a bazaar. They offer consolation and solidarity and uplift, competing as they do in a marketplace. But we have a right to remember how barbarically they behaved when they were strong and were making an offer that people could not refuse.”

I'd guess he either votes Labour or Green, he's based in Sydney.

    EDIT

But yeah I'm sure they have a "problematic" history if you go back far enough.
