How do I remove rust off cast-iron plates; [LIFTING BRAHS GTFIH]

Misc lifting brahs, need your help on this one

So one of my mates who said he's not lifting right now pretty much has a home gym filled to the brink with weight plates, barbells, dumbells. I'm talking like 20 of each and they're all cast-iron so it feels heavier as usual and I'm ****ing cheering. Only problem is they are filled to the brink with rust.

What's the best way to go about cleaning this up to reduce any health concerns and just make it all clean and furnished once again?

    depends how rusty we're talking

if it's surface rust and not flaking off in chunks, drill/angle grinder with a wire wheel and some paint, just wear a respirator cause huffing rust dust all day isn't terribly good for your health either

soaking in vinegar is effective too but messy and probably not necessary

Wire brush attachment on a drill

Then hit it with an anti rust primer then hammertone

Came to suggest wire brush...but just lol, they’re covered.

You can buy liquid products to clean it off like Rustoff or RustKlean.

They’re quite expensive and you need gloves, but piece of piss to use, wipe on, leave till the rust goes blue then rinse off.

Otherwise just leave them looking like Bronze Age artefacts

i mean that's not compromised metal in any way, that's just a good coating of surface rust. quick wire brush to break up the patches then like r32 said, rusty metal primer and some paint. hammered paint is common for things like machinery and weights since it's a bit tougher. you might even get the good hammerite stuff out there in oz, i know its more common outside of the states

if you have some vinegar laying around, experiment with the small plates, you might like how they come out with just a 24hr soak. just be aware stuff flash rusts after coming out of the vinegar so you'll still have to paint

pfft that's just some surface rust - wire brush attachment on either a drill or angle grinder will fix that in short order.
Hit them with some red oxide primer and metal paint of your choice and you're good to go.

Why do the dumbbell handles have 4 spin lock collars on each one? As far as I can see they have shoulders for the plates to push up against.

Does it really matter tho OP? Cus maybe it would lower the weight off a 45 lb weight to be 44.5 lbs and then you're frauding your PRs

Steel wool and simple no abrasive dish soap. They dry off and burn off any remaining water on the stove. You will need to create the seasoning again of course.
