I want a home gym someday and it shouldn't cost too much because all I'll need is a rack, a bar, and some weights cause all I'm going to do are squats and OHP.

The cons I see are gym fail videos. It's unlikely to happen but the possibility of passing out while lifting alone is scary even with a rack.

However, here's my list of cons:

    1. It's not cheaper than a commercial gym. Don't kid yourself. I think I have about $4500 into my gym currently, so that's 112.5 months at $40/month. 9 years to pay for it. And, I'm not done with purchases. Would like to pick up a lat pulldown/row.
    2. Equipment options are more limited than a commercial gym.
    3. Atmosphere - while waiting for equipment sucks, there is something to be said about working out around other like minded people. The eye candy helps too.
How the hell do you have $4500 into it and not even a lat pulldown? I have like $1500 in mine and even have that. Powerblocks, power rack, lat pulldown, bench, olympic weight set. All you need. I didn't even need the powerblocks but had an extra $500 to spend. So for $1000 you could have all you need.

The biggest con is that equipment is expensive. However, most equipment maintains its value and even in several years it will still be worth close to what you paid for it.

If you live in a high humidity area you may want to invest in a dehumidifier to avoid rust

I assume this is if you own a house

    Cons:
-Takes up a whole small room if you have standard lifting equipment
-Have to touch up drywall when you accidentally hit it with the bar

That's it. Ignore people saying it's expensive. A gym membership for 2.5-3 years for me and my wife costs the same as my equipment. It's already paid for itself.

I have a squat rack / bench press, 45 lb bar and 2x plates for 45 35, 25, 10, 5, and 2.5. Dumbbell weights (pairs) from 5 to 50 lbs. A weight tree and some resistance bands.

I love it cuz no worry of corona. But my gym is in the garage and it can get hot some days.

I can go workout whenever convenient for me

No waiting for equipment to become available but below are frustrations I gotta deal with

    - limited machines obviously. Don’t have leg press available
    - eye candy is good to have but not necessary
    - dumbbells
    - I use cap barbell and weights - miss the better commercial grade weights - but my plates are same heavy as at a commercial gym so it works
    - I initially spent $700 on a very basic rack/lat pulldown / pulley combo and cap barbell and weight set. Quickly learnt that was chit. Returned the first rack and bought a better one with two pulleys and chest exercise option. Cost about $1100 total or so.

I told myself to not spend more but you always want more. I keep buying stuff online and there is a big list of wanna haves that I may get in the future.
All in all, I love my setup I just wish I had more room to keep adding more machines.

I will keep my gym membership ($12/month heck yea) and will go for cardio once vaccine is found
    - I will need to buy two 45lb plates Which will set me back $100 to $300 depending on what I get.

Current cardio is HIIT couple times a week on my bicycle

Pros - If you finish an epic set, you can literally masturbate right there on the equipment to celebrate

Cons - There's no chance that while you are masturbating on the equipment, some hottie is going to walk by and say "nice cawk boyo, want some fuk?"

I've decided I am gym membership 4 life crew, while my brother is slowly assembling his home gym. He lives where its really cold and snowy, so going to the gym for damn near half the year is a pain in the butt and morning workouts are completely miserable. I have recently purchased an exercise bike because of Rona and I love it. I've had a treadmill and even an elliptical at home before. But now that I have the bike, I feel stupid for buying those things (I don't have them anymore). Other than finding a way around the butthurt, having a bike at home is frickin perfect to make it so that you don't have to do EVERY workout at the gym.

Easy. Buy new Commercial equipment, not CL and include shipping. The used equipment market sucks where I'm at.

It all comes down to how much space you have, how much dough you're willing to throw down, and creativity with whatever you end up with.

Rona is gonna delay gym openings for at least another two months in my country.

Im about to buy a rack, bench and some weights. May still go to the gym 2-3 days a week for specific work (when they open) but having a home gym is perfect; plus I can train at midnight with my music, simply beautiful.

Cons of having a home gym: none.

Financially speaking? Gonna spend less than 1k so really dont mind.

Thanks, guys super helpful. But, Ugh! I feel like this is going to be me trying to switch back to the electric razor again. Love the convenience, hate that its not as close of a shave - have gone back and forth on that so many times.

Anyone dabble in home gym, and then go back to commercial gym? Or split the difference and get just a rack and bench, bar and plates, and still keep membership? Is there a best of both worlds?

I also have two sons. Granted only 4 and 7, but they would probably get use out of equipment too. Pretty conflicted.

There was a guy a few months ago who was allegedly loaded and he bought everything you could ever have in a home gym, like seriously EVERYTHING. Kind of mirin him now with everything thats going on.

But Cons I can think of:

    - Cost: Gym membership at $20 a month, for 30 years would be $7,200 over the course of your life. A basic at home gym could run $5,000+ when you take into account the equipment, but then flooring, ventilation, accessories like mirrors and music.

    - Space: You take up space in your own home whether its a garage, basement, room, shed, etc. You lose that space for other things like an office, storage, etc. The space is also often really small, which I find is weird to work out in, and feel boxed in.

    - Equipment: A gym could have a variety of things like pull down bar, every dumbell weight, tons of plates, cables, ab machines, stair master, etc. All pieces of equipment you could use to program different workouts, and do things on the fly if something is taken up. At a home gym you will largely be hampered by what you have bought. If you buy a lot you can do a lot. If you have a barbell and some plates, then you'll be able to do less.

    - Safety: If you are working out and get hurt, drop something, etc., then no one might be around to help you. It was the first thing I was taught when I was a freshman in High School, was to never lift alone or without someone watching you. A home gym might be only you and you might get stuck. Then I also think about kids/other people using it or playing around with it and getting hurt, or even worse.

    - Maintenance: Pieces of equipment break, floors break, things get ripped, etc. In a typical gym it's all taken care of by them. In a home gym you would need to replace everything yourself, and if you bought lower end equipment at the start, you'll have to rebuy it at some point. You also need to clean and sanitize everything.

    - Social/Motivation: Some people get motivated seeing people get shredded, and therefore try harder. They also see friends and coworkers in the gym where they can catch up or say hi (conversations longer than a few minutes is a no-no in my book). In a home gym you are pretty much alone which is great for some people, but some people might feel left out or not able to show off their progress.

If I had to pick, I'd stay with a gym membership. My gym costs $10 a month, is in a massive old warehouse with high ceilings, brand new equipment, new bathrooms/locker rooms, health bar, etc. For a home gym, I like the fact you don't have to wait for machines to open up and you can get a workout done quicker, but I like the social environment in a gym. I also like that me having to go to a gym removes distractions from my workout, whereas in a home gym you have a bf/gf, wife/husband, kids, xbox, tv, etc. from disrupting your workout. In a gym I drive there, throw my Air Pods in, and I hit the stone for an hour and a half.

"Because the thing about repairing, maintaining, and cleaning is it’s not an adventure. There’s no way to do it so wrong you might die. It’s just work. And the bottom line is, some people are okay going to work, and some people … well, some people would rather die. Each of us gets to choose.”

Maintenance isn't really an issue at home. All he has to do is handle it like the gym. When something breaks, just post a sign on it for months. Then just do a maintenance assessment on all of the members to pay to replace it. He's the only member, but its still a sound strategy.

The con for me is I would never use my home gym if I can go to a commercial gym. I spent @$1500 for home gym stuff and never used it. Besides never using it, it took up limited space.

All I have now is pull up bar, high parallette for dips, low parallette for hand stands, a bunch of bands and Olympic rings mounted high. I can get a good workout with this stuff and it doesn't take up much space. I have only used my home stuff because of the crap going on now. Once gyms open, I go to the gym and my home stuff gets put away.
