Guy at work is getting laid off.

How it relates to me is that they're giving me all of his work while not giving me any raise or promotion.

Are cutbacks a sign that I have to suck it up and deal with this? Or, does them concentrating all the work onto me make me more invaluable meaning I can slack off?

Normally, I would not give any fuks and start looking for a new job but it's Corona rn.

i don't know if "you should slack off" would be my advice

down the road you bring this up in a review for a raise or promotion, absolutely. look at this as an opportunity. so many people hit a ceiling and don't get chances to take on new/expanded roles. you just did.

don't say anything about compensation yet of course. give it a long while especially with how everybody's losing jobs and whatnot.

it's kind of a double edged sword. yeah you kind of become more valuable because your workload increases but your workload increases and you got no raise. It's a tough job environment right now and will be for a while just suck it up in the meantime. Was he older than you aka making more and costing the company?

Do you clock in at a set time work then clock out at same time every day? Or now that you have more responsibilities are you expected to stay until you finish both your work and his work. IE longer hours. Are you paid commission, salary, or hourly?

The only real reason to complain is if you went from working 8h per day and are not working 12-16h per day to get the work done.

As far as a pay raise most places don't just toss raises whenever they feel like it. Its usually a set review. Every 6 months to a year. If you handle all of his work and your work accordingly I'm sure you'll be in for a raise on your next review.

I'm in IT and try to switch jobs every 2 years anyway. My income is a function of my skills, not seniority/simping for management. The new work doesn't teach me anything that marketable so no extra pay is pure cuckening.

    Been there, done that brah.

    Left shortly after.

You'll likely not get any compensation, and it sounds like this is the kind of place that will just can you and pile it on the next guy.

If you're not already well paid, I'd brush off the resume.

They are trying to get the most work out of you with the least pay. I would start looking for other jobs. If you are essential, I'd do something to where the company needs you and then you negotiate a higher pay.

This line of thinking I find utterly bogus. How the fuk have we got to a point where it’s completely normal to not ask for additional compensation in line of the fact some other dude has been laid off and all/most of his work has been dumped on you...

That is just fukin’ insanity, and the sooner employees stop thinking like that the better.

If nothing was mentioned about additional compensation, hiring a junior guy or contractor in the near term to lighten your load, etc, I would start looking for new work ASAP. Your salary is a deal between you and your employer, and they just changed their end of the bargain hard.

Gonna be super fukking chitty trying to find work right now with 50% of companies in a hiring freeze and a wave of laid-off applicants hammering the other 50%, but the best time to look for a job is while you have a job.

This is not going to just pass because the market is juiced. A burst from pent up demand and stimulus has been expected all along. We have a massive output gap that is going to take years to work off.
Now is the time to grind and be a company man if there has ever been a time for that.
