Is eating bad food ACTUALLY bad for you?

I'm not talking about body weight, i'm talking about general health.
    Just wanted some opinions.

Does eating a diet high in refined sugars, "bad fats" e.g trans fats, preservetives, artificial sweetners and so on and so forth, does it actually impact overall general health, ageing, hormonal function and so on and so forth?

Or is the impact negligible and it's more down to genetics and other factors?

If it results in not getting sufficient vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, fiber, protein and essential fats then yes, it's bad for you.

"Bad" foods are ok in the context of an overall healthy diet. It's the total diet that matters typically.

Refined sugars - if your bodyfat % is in a healthy range, you exercise regularly, and your cholesterol levels are ok, you can probably go quite a bit higher than the recommended 10% of your total energy intake maximum per day without negative consequences, though I'd still preferentially eat refined sugars with meals to help slow digestion

Trans fats - the industrial type are pretty much universally regarded as harmful but are thankfully being phased out of the food supply chain. Ruminant trans fats are likely less harmful but are also consumed in smaller numbers (historically) so it's been harder to determine to what extent that is the reason for fewer observed negative health outcomes.

Preservatives - this is much trickier to answer concretely and I don't think we have a great evidence base to discuss the health ramifications of preservatives as a whole.

Artificial sweeteners - everything I've read indicates consuming these in moderation is ok, there's a bit of research indicating these can worsen insulin sensitivity when consumed in trials by people who previously did not consume them typically but in people who do consume them typically this doesn't seem to be an effect that worsens over time and it may just be temporary, so if you use them and you have an ok fasting glucose level as a quick screen it's not something I would worry about.

I think it just shows you care about your body and your mind, and you want to take care of yourself (when you eat better). When you feel good about yourself, you tend to choose healthier foods to nourish yourself.

But I realize everybody has a different way of looking at this topic. And everybody has a different "relationship" with food (especially "comfort food"), diet and lifestyle eating habits.
Fact: My first-generation uncle was a boxer who fought Sugar Ray Robinson! He also fought in the war, sacrificing the career he deeply loved, so people could have the right to freedom.

Well if you consume it in 'high' amounts as a % of your regular diet over time, then yeah Im guessing so...

    CICO, IIFYM, etc.

I think where they become "bad" for you is when you eat mainly "bad" foods and don't leave much room for the good foods.

If you eat 2000 calories a day and 200 of those are made up of potato chips it's no issue. However if 1,800 of them are made up of potato chips you're gonna be seriously lacking in other essentials that your body needs.

If you over-eat in general you're gonna get fat regardless of the type of food.
