Got offered my job back... at a significantly reduced salary. What can I do? (HELP)

    Hi guys. Backstory:

Physical therapist that got furloughed during this pandemic as I'm sure a lot of you also have.
I currently make around 80k salary as an outpatient PT. My boss called me tonight to offer my job back to me at full time hours (40/week) with a reduced salary of around 50k "until things get busier". With that being said, I would be making less on that salary as I am making on unemployment. What can I do in this situation? If I say no, will I lose my unemployment?
    Any help is appreciated. Cheers!

you're making more than 50k on unemployment?

    wtf

no one on unemployment should make as much as anyone with a full time job, regardless of what it is

That's crazy. I'm only making 800/2 weeks on unemployment. I wish that was me.

Feel like part of the deal was you could just claim "I'm a pussy and afraid of Corona!" and even if your employer offered your job back that you can still get unemployment. Issue is, unemployment with the bonus goes for another month or two - and if I was your employer and knew you rejected the job just to collect unemployment I'd probably say **** you when it came time to come back (granted your reaction is reasonable).

I guess my reaction to the boss calling would be, "Well why am I not working less hours for less money if things are slow? Why would I be full time if there's no work right now?" And just try to work 25 hours a week or w/e to match the drop in salary.

Look at it this way, you’ll have way more leverage demanding a raise/promotion before walking away for a higher paying job if you don’t act like a big shot (turning down the furlough pay) with what’s surely a few years experience max in the field

To those asking about the unemployment. Before I was making about 3k per 2 weeks. Unemployment granted me a whopping 381 a week. The reason why I'm taking home more money is due to the additional 600.

I'm not the best at math, but I am fairly sure that $1500 a week is more than $981 a week?

ETA: So @ $50K it would be $961 a week vs. unemployment is $981 and it is only temporarily going to be that high, while the job is supposed to only temporarily be that low. Also you are new in your profession.

    Doesn't seem too tough.

If they’re not as busy as usual, why wouldn’t they offer you the same hourly wage but with reduced hours so you at least get more time off?

I mean if they’re not busy, you’re going to be sitting around with your thumb up your bum for a big pay cut?

Are they reducing your billing rate? I’m gonna assume not, or at least not that significantly

First, check your state laws as to whether you lose eligibility for unemployment if you turn down a job offer. Second, ask for $60k and go back to work- bite the bullet and be grateful you’re employed when 1/5th or the country has lost their job in the last 9 weeks.

So yeah, you can turn that offer down and not worry. If your boss reports to unemployment you may have to contact unemployment and explain the situation. Goodluck with contacting a live person on the phone during these times.

I seriously appreciate you making an account just to respond to my post btw.

My biggest issue is I need around 4K a month to survive and be net neutral. On unemployment right now 380 + 600 per week I make just that.
With the new salary I'd be at around 3300 take home, which would put me in the red.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess it’s your boss’ strategy to recoup overhead costs. Cutting your hours and paying you the same rate would reduce his labour costs but will put him/her at a loss in terms of paying rent / mortgage and keeping the lights on

Paying you less but billing out at the usual rate would give more $$$ to cover the stuff that would normally be covered with more billable hours flowing through

Take the job. You don't know what the market will be like in the near future. Work for a while and if your salary doesn't increase like they say, look for another job. It's easier to find another job when you already have one.

Not bad advice, but its a huge slap in the face from the employer IMO.

    Accept that job.

Begin looking for another one. When and if the offer to return to your previous salary comes to fruition ask for 90k depending on your comfort level and leverage. Or pursue another position externally.

The COVID unemployment boost is set to expire at the end of July. Then you will really be in the red.
