Not a valid comparison. D2 was released ages ago and most might answer that it is better merely because of feels and good ol' days. The better comparison is D3 vs POE.

All in all, if you leave the good ol' days aside, POE is better and there not even a reason to think about it. POE has depth, content, learning curve and mechanisms that are simply unmatched not just in the ARPG genre but arguably in all of video games since the dawn of time. Add to that how insanely active the developer is pushing major game-changing content every three months.

D2 was a great game, it was revolutionary at the time and introduced so many new things to the genre and gaming industry, but we are 20 years later. I would instant buy a remaster but wont go back to it.

Path of Exile is designed for no life gamers that want to do nothing but mindlessly press one button while listening to metal music for 6-12 hours a day.

Just keep that in mind when answering, everybody.

edit: to the guy above me... all you have to do in path of exile is following a leveling guide, then run around pressing one button nonstop and you will defeat even the hardest bosses in the game (and this is the strategy that everyone who plays the game uses to beat the hardest bosses).

Literally this. Some buddies at work love PoE and some of them have sent me guides and I tried to play, but I just watch end game streams and that's all you do. Min/max a 1-click clearscreen build. Not really for me.

League start of POE is much better than league start of D3, however POE endgame quickly becomes kill bosses to sell/buy stuff. Some people enjoy that aspect of the game. Some don't and play self found.

I think at some point, if you can stomach the grind for levels in D3 the ladder is more fun as far as endgame.

Races in POE are decent as well, curious to see how things go with Method taking over the races.

PoE is a better game on every single metric except for fun. I put in like 20 hours into it and never really felt like i was having fun. I kept forcing myself to play more and more to try to get it but i guess it's just not for me

d3 is a worse game but it's so much more fun. d2 is a flawless game for it's era and it's more fun than any of them

D2 for me, still play it from time to time now; it's a simpler game but that's kind of why I like it.

The difficulty and set system in D3 is addictive. Working through the torments is fantastic. PoE lacks in that regard. It just seems to get harder as you go and forces you to grind just to progress. Also, I've played through the first 5 acts and I still don't know wtf the game is about. The lack of cutscenes is honestly fukking criminal, but its free to play.

Another huge gripe of mine with PoE is dying means NOTHING. Just NOTHING (to casuals). Might as well just keep respawning outside the boss's lair and leroying in.

the bolded is the issue. There's so much content and so much "figure it out via youtube" that it's too much of a hassle for me. the game isn't intuitive enough for the amount of content it has. It needs better in game explanations/natural progression of knowledge

You are a computer science brah and you do not enjoy POE? literally 50% of the player base are engineers, and I dare say a lot of them are CS. I am disappoint . Do you not like spending time creating builds in path of building and testing a million variation to come up with the best results?. "Figuring it out" is literally what makes poe awesome.
    Spoiler!

does this not give you an erection? what kind of cs are you? you come clean right now. I am a strategy consultant and I could not find something as captivating as POE.

It means nothing because you are just leveling up, death will become the most painful thing once you are done with the story. As you will start losing levels %.

The story line and the atmosphere around it is better in D2 then in PoE. However that is only relevant the first playthrough or when revisiting after a few years. Most ARPG players play/grind such games to a much larger extent then just experiencing the story line, and for such players PoE offers a much richer experience.

I don't know is it? I don't remember it that way. I guess maybe I never got to that point despite getting to max level and farming for a good while. I was also in my early teens. It's simple enough to play without a guide whereas PoE really isn't for the progression type stuff.

Current gen ARPG's haven't quite hooked me in the same way d2 did.

I'm just a regular full stack dev but did my masters in ai, thesis focusing on convolutional neural networks specifically

But yeah I can say I don't enjoy poe at all. I play games these days mostly to unwind and relax. Or to enjoy a good story. poe's story/storytelling is meh at best and I can't be bothered with min/maxing such a complex game.

d3 is a worse game but it's so much more fun. d2 is a flawless game for it's era and it's more fun than any of them

Something about the combat/killing things in poe doesn't feel as visceral and satisfying

I love D2, D3, and POE, all for different reasons

POE is by far the most complex. I "only" have about 700 hours in it, and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface. The level of min/maxing u can do is seemingly never ending. I like that because there's always something to chase. I'm only on my 2nd league and I've literally only played 2 builds. It basically takes me the entire league to min/max it to the point where I feel like I can comfortably do all the content (I am a noob tho and people balls deep in the game can probably get there in a few weeks of no life-ing it).

D2 was the game that really started the genre. It was amazing for it's time and will always be special to me, but if u didn't play it around the time it was new it will likely feel old af and clunky to u. the itemization is a solid 9/10 which is really important for an ARPG imo.

D3 is good for more of a noob player. There's a decent amount of depth if u wanna really get balls deep in the group meta play/pushing solo leader boards, but it doesn't require nearly the same amount of theorycrafting thought that POE does. Everything is pretty standard cookie cutter in terms of min/maxing. The itemization is pretty trash compared to D2 and POE. I really enjoy the first couple weeks of a season and leveling all my gems, auging my gear, and seeing how far I can solo push before it just becomes a paragon grind.

All fun games for different reasons.

    no thx Jeff.

Diablo3 was garbage upon release but it was actually pretty good after reaper of souls release.
I thought the same thing about the skill tree before I played the game. It's actually not nearly as daunting as it initially looks. Different builds tend to stay in certain areas in the skill tree, and it's pretty apparent when u start branching off what would be completely useless for your build. But it's nice in that you have options to take a lot of different specs if u want.

yeah the skill treereally guides you by proximity honestly. It's a genius system. I just wish the game was a little more fun. It's still 8/10.

Trying to grasp the whole talent tree and then min max your own build based on that is not an approach I'd recommend to new PoE players. I'd say for most new players watching a few different build videos then pick the playstyle that looks appealing would be a better path. The economic system of PoE is also one of the very best, far superior to any Diablo game.
