His father wanted power back to the people and the empire to function without an emperor. You have to realize it wasn't until after Julius Caesar when Augustus took power that one man was essentially the all powerful ruler of Rome. He was greedy and wanted to be all powerful. Was willing to kill his father for that power.
Even if he'd have stepped aside he'd have still been royal/wealthy/powerful.

I hated Commodus because he was a beta phag
But you really can't blame him. Back then in Rome it was common for generals to depose even Emperors, since they had the army's support as well as the people's more often than not.
It was also common for the winning party to wipe out the opposition's entire family so they don't have to worry about revenge later.
Politically he made the correct move, if he had killed Maximus he would have probably been emperor until his natural death.
He was a product of his time, but still a complete phag

That character was very well written in that they made him 100% unlikable.
thats compounded by the fact that maximus was such a great hero.
If at any point in that movie you find yourself rooting against maximus, there is something wrong with you.
