Not trying to diminish Rice, because he is amazing, but it feels like he was also largely ahead of his time. If Jerry Rice played in today's league, he would be a great WR and all, but if some of the freaks from todays game (Calvin Johnson, Tyreek Hill, Julio Jones, etc.) played in the 80's and 90's they would have been even more unstoppable than Rice was. The only DB who could have even been within 10 yards of them would have been Deion.
But I guess in 20-30 years we will probably say the same thing about that crop of players, since sports science seems to grow very rapidly.Everything depends upon execution; having just a vision is no solution.
Performance and performance alone dictates the predator in any food chain.

Rice is #1 overall when you take all aspects into consideration. He had nearly 20 years of NFL production. This shows that he had the intelligence to adjust his game and learn once his physical skills diminished. Many other WRs rely on their freakish athleticism and can't adjust when they start slowing down.
In a battle for #2, I am partial to Owens to be honest because had had an incredible drive to win and played his ass off all the time. Moss was a freak, but he was known for taking plays off and slack. Prime example of someone relying on their talent.
Calvin would likely be up there had he not suffered in Detroit and spent 2/3 of his career in bracket coverage leading to early retirement. From a physical standpoint, Calvin is unmatched. Humble AF guy too.
Moss was incredible because of how effortless he made it look. There was no way to stop him when he was motivated, but that was the problem during his career. He wasn't always giving 100%6'1 - 240lbs

Yeah I am on the same page here with your logic. If you were to build a perfect WR, Calvin would be it. If you put all the great WRs in a draft, without knowing how their pro careers turned out, Megatron would be the first WR taken IMO. Speed, size, strength, ball skills, and character.

So, AB was pretty much the best WR for the past 10 years. Go ahead and tell me about how much of a “freak” he is. How much of a “freak” is Fitzgerald? Is Hopkins a freak? Not very big or fast.
Jerry Rice is the GOAT route runner and has the GOAT hands. 41 more touchdowns than any other receiver has ever had. Playing a lot in an era where QB’s never threw 30 TD’s in a season. Tell me more about how Calvin Johnson would’ve been 50 TD’s better than he was in an era where there were much fewer pass attempts.America
