Anyone ever dig a French drain system?

    Srs.

Our back yard is awesome but the drainage is terrible. Tons of standing water near the house killing grass. Looking at digging a trench and filling it with rock. Do I need to actually grade it to a real drainage point, or will just having a dry creek bed take enough of the water?

You posted in the home improvement post? I don't remember names on here.

I dug this with a buddy last year. It sucked hard with the clay soil we have here. This is not a french drain but just solid PVC with two 12 inch catch basins.

If you have standing water, a system like I have might be best. French drains are meant to remove excess water under the surface. Standing water can be taken care of with catch basins and solid pipes to take it elsewhere.

I have a creek behind my house. I ran 110 feet of PVC with the recommended slope for such projects, and just have it empty itself into the creek. Just calculate the proper amount of fall over a perfectly level lawn, and then compensate for what your actual surface heights are.

Ideally you want enough fall in the trench. You need to have pipe in the trench.

You can buy pipe with sock and fake rock around it already so you don't have to haul rock.

You may need a box or two as well.

You really like need pipe bro?

What I've seen is people basically digging a trench, laying fabric, then rocks on top like this:

I don't know if that is the appropriate solution.

But if you need to dig, just rent a demo hammer and a spade bit from A Tool Shed or wherever.

Don't be intimidated by the labor, it's easy with the right tools. You do not need to dig that with a shovel. I've done it.

You can rent a trencher at home depot. Just be careful you don't cut anything you don't want to cut. Power/Gas/Water companies will often come out for free or low cost and mark it for you. "Call before you dig" they call it. I've got to build one. Basement getting wet.

No you dont need pipe. No you don't need specific grading. Water will seek it's own level. Literally any amount of pitch will work.

Pipe is actually cheaper than good stone btw.
