Why are low end essential workers still working?

Anyone at a grocery store, fast food restaurant, or any position where you make less than $20 an hour, shouldn't they all be trying to get laid off? Unemployment in just about any state with the stimulus bill is gonna give you $750+ a week. No way these places bumped their pay, so why are they not trying to get laid off and make 50-100% more money these next 20 weeks?

Consider $600 a week is the pay before taxes for an employee who works 40 hours a week at $15 an hour, or 30 hours a week at $20 an hour. So not working will pay that person the $600 federal benefit on top of the regular benefit of $300 depending on the state. So it is $600 a week if you work, and $900 a week if you do not. For the minimum wage person who makes $400 a week, the effect is more extreme.

    You ever wonder...

    does essential mean expendable?

"essential" jobs are trades and service, things that are easily replaceable for a very low cost.

I agree fast food and coffee shops should shut down. I give people that work at grocery stores credit, it takes a lot of balls to be in the line of fire for probably minimum wage.

And then what are the rest of us gonna do about food? Also I'm pretty sure getting fired is different than gettting laid off in terms of unemployment

So you would be okay being a Grocery store clerk working for $8-10 an hour interacting with the swarms of people while some non essential business clerk doing the same thing you were now gets to sit at home for 4 months getting paid double?

How do you try to get laid off? If you fck off you get fired, no unemployment.

And yes it sucks that some people are getting paid more for not working.

"An employee who is fired for being a poor fit for the job, lacking the necessary skills for the position, or failing to perform up to expected standards will likely be able to collect unemployment. But an employee who acts intentionally or recklessly against the employer's interests will likely be ineligible for unemployment benefits."

Looks like you still can collect unemployment as long as you don't get fired for extreme misconduct. But just being poor at your job? Still qualify

I already know of a person who chose that who made $20 an hour and he didn't even work an essential job but could have worked from home.

And yes, I would without a doubt choose to try to make $20+ an hour from unemployment and relaxing over being exposed to humans all day for $8-11 an hour on my feet all day.

We are reducing their hours enough for them to qualify for unemployment, and then re employing them at reduced hour just enough to where they can get full unemployment and still make $300 a week.

If I was 20 and working to pay for school then yeah I'd probably do it...but if that job was the only thing I had going on I don't think I would. I'd just assume think more longterm than a few months. Once the Coronabucks are gone and you're jobless and competing with a bunch of other people it probably wont seem like such a great choice.

On top of that we are paying their insurance premiums on while furlough before hours are back.

Work ethic and value systems vary from person to person and family to family. With that being said not every person wants to game the system and some people like their jobs. The people at my local Safeway and Giant are friendly and work hard so with benefits and a chance at overtime pay they are okay with the jobs.

Or so it seems. Many have been there forever.
sums it up a thread will start off promising and then turn into name calling..
The easiest way to tell when an argument has no merit is when the protagonist mixes in some personal insults.

Unemployment is usually based on a percentage of your wages earned.

Is there something different going on now?

Ya, part of the $2 trillion stimulus bill. You get your state unemployment and the federal government is tossing a flat $600 a week on top of that regardless what you made.

The reality is that if you were laid off involuntarily or your company offered volunteer layoffs, and you make less than $50,000 you'll take home as much or more than you earned when you were actually working.

This is the result of the hard working Democrats in office working to protect the people who need it the most.

Forget the $1,200. Just give us all $600 a week employed or not until June.
