Point of the thread is that politicians are using the covid fear without justification or at least without solid evidence. It's like Cuomo saying on Monday how everyone will die from the virus and then on Tuesday, he says "oh, don't stress you worry worts. We're flattening the curve and seeing results." Then on Wednesday, "We don't have enough respirators! We're all gonna die"!

Not to make excuses for anyone, but let's take a step back and look at how difficult it is to be a Government official at this point. You have everyone: your constituents, media, law enforcement, health care workers, etc.. clamoring for information on what's going on, what steps are being taken, what the future will bring (lol), and what everyone should do. This is an incredibly volatile situation that seems to change hourly with new data being analyzed and published. It's a lose-lose situation for anyone trying to make a public statement. It's easy to look back at what these government officials have said and armchair quarterback it with 20/20 vision.

This goes for everyone here: put yourself in Trump's shoes, or Cuomo's shoes, or whatever governor/senator/etc you dislike and think about how stressful it is right now to "get it right." These people aren't medical professionals, they have no medical background, yet the public expects them to have that knowledge and speak accurately on a topic that changes hourly. Let's put aside the vitriol and show some compassion and understanding. Try being a good human.

Agreed. One can criticize Trump or other political leaders for their inaction during the beginning stages, but to me I believe it was the correct action: stall for time to get empirical data (if possible), don't cause a panic, and find some way to start a discussion about what's happening. No one is perfect. No official could have made exactly the right calls and moves.

Also a panic and massive mobs swarming the grocery stores is a good way to spread disease. We know this did still happen to a degree but it was nothing like it would have been if leadership across the country told everyone a killer virus was coming for them and that being the very first thing they heard about it.

Over a third of American adults are obese, it would no doubt have a big effect if all of a sudden over 33% of Americans stopped going to work. The obese are not a majority but still a big issue.

Than people dying? Yes you would think so

Other than an uptick in suicides, there's no evidence that mortality rates increase during recessions - the opposite actually seems to be true, they decrease overall:

In contrast, the recessions of 1921, 1930–1933, and 1938 coincided with declines in mortality and gains in life expectancy. The only exception was suicide mortality which increased during the Great Depression, but accounted for less than 2% of deaths.

Yeah that's pretty much as fake as it gets. That would be something like 270000 deaths in march in Italy lol. If you went by the 2017 numbers it would be 292425 dead.

    http://euromomo.eu/index.html
You can go look at real numbers if you want, and see that the death rate up until march 30th in Italy is around the same as the death rate in the 2017 season, although you can expect these numbers to still rise a little bit. I guess it's more fun to spread bull**** though.

That is a good example of talking point manipulation.

The way you deal with that is by pointing it out like your article did... However, the Alaska homicide rate discussion you clearly demonstrated your inability to comprehend WHAT was being done to manipulate numbers and what wasn't. Same thing with your post in this thread touching that topic.

GUN DEATHS per captia is not a chitty statistic because it is by capita, but because it is failing to factor in substitution and also includes self inflicted harm.

So you switch what you are measuring. Not HOW you are measuring. (Homicide) Which STILL has Alaska as more dangerous than California.

This isn't because of guns as other HIGH percentage gun ownership rates are some of the safest.

Know what you are good at and know what you aren't... Statistics isn't your strong point.

Right, which has been my supreme worry since Day 1. Is this the new normal? This country can not survive another shutdown in a few years when the next pandemic appears. If we don't learn from this situation, and radically change... fuk. I don't even know man... it won't be good.

Just like 9/11, this is going to fundamentally change how people travel and interact with one another. I bet there is a massive push for "virtual vacations".

Trip was for June. Cancelled. Lost a bit of change on events we paid for but everything else refundable. I don't know if we are at the point yet where virtual vacations will be a thing ala Total Recall or other such movies. Too many countries depend on tourism revenue and VR just isn't good enough, yet. I'm of the mind that this will be forgotten by most within a couple years and almost no lessons will be learned.

    Pretty basic, yes?
I hate the argument that we can't take more strategic isolation and preventative measures because the population is too dumb.

If they are too dumb to protect themselves, then I really don't feel sorry for them.

If you get diagnosed with high cholesterol, you change your diet. If you're too dumb to do so you're probably gonna die early. Same with a lot of health issues and diseases, you have to change your behavior if you're at risk for something.

If someone as a health condition and they are too dumb to take cautionary measures even around friends and family, then I'm sorry i don't feel that much sympathy for them. I go out plenty still, but it's not hard to avoid my parents knowing they are at risk.
