It's crazy what they are doing but I know some families who are happy they have family members out now.
Not sure if you guys remember the story I posted here some years ago about my friend Dennis who almost killed a cop and was getting ready for sentencing? Well he did get his sentencing 25 years and now he is out, him and I spoke on the phone yesterday and he was crying out of of happiness. I asked him was this temporary and he said no, he was pardoned by the state and considered time served.
I am really happy for Dennis, he has two little girls who missed him dearly while he was locked up and they would have been grown adults if he had served the whole 25 years.
What do you guys think of this situation NY letting folks out of prison for fear of them spreading the virus among each other??

That there be Govment for ya, political over common sense. They also be threatening to lock-up folks for not "social distancing" not sure bout NY (Gov Al Pacino be kinda threatening, but not really specific?). Cali, on the other-hand, that dude be telling folks to "snitch", my, my how things are so fukkked now!
Socially close/leaving house = capital murderer.

It is a peculiarity of the US that so many people are in prison ( measured by how many people are in prison per 100,000 population). For whatever reason, the US is much higher than elsewhere. Russia is only competitor
This data is old (2009?) But presented very clearly and easy to read

This is largely the same and is current data, but harder to see https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List...rceration_rate
Good to hear of Dennis's release, from the little of the story you have told, sounds like being released is the right thing, also sounds like he's served enough time (more than enough?) already.

Dam a year. Do you think he is reformed/rehabilitated or will he go back to what he was doing that got him locked up in the first place?
How many thousands of prisoners are they letting out?
Wow,that must be some decision for the parole board.
With that ventilator shortage i get it, i think Cuomo said he has 1 weeks worth left. There is an unspoken thing, we are iron brothers and sisters, we are to support each other and...It is our duty to support our brothers and sisters in the iron game!

Maybe, but if they are letting out a guy convicted of attempted murder, then it doesn't seem like they are being terribly discriminating about who they release.
Personally, I think a blanket release of inmates is an incredibly dumb idea that is going to bite them in the @ss later. It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

Kinda sounds like the jury saw it differently. That said, my post wasn't aimed at debating the merits of Dennis's case, but rather pointing out that if they are letting out those convicted of attempted murder, then they aren't just limiting the release to nonviolent offenders.

Agreed, i would assume non-violent offenders would be the first to go. Unless OP’s friend was a higher risk due to pre-existing conditions or maybe being in contact with infected inmates. Although that wouldn’t necessarily explain the pardon. Either way the guy has a second chance many don’t get, for the sake of his kids I hope he understands that."it's likely one of us will have to spend some days alone"

Lots in the system for non violent weed offences which is now legal in many places. I would hope they them walk before someone with an attempted murder conviction.

Unfortunately, there are enough ways for people to kill one another that we need to have a whole set of words to describe it. Definitions vary by state but for the most part:
First degree murder is planning and committing an act with the specific intention to take the life of another human being. You planned it, you followed through, and you (usually) tried to hide it. Generally
Second degree murder is intentionally taking the life of another in the heat of passion. You didn't plan it, but you made a conscious decision to kill.
Third degree murder and manslaughter are two terms for the same thing. Voluntary manslaughter is similar to second degree murder in that there is intent without premeditation, but under circumstances in which any "reasonable person" would become mentally or emotionally unstable enough to kill.
Involuntary manslaughter is where your reckless or careless action or inaction results in the death of another. A situation went south because you f*cked up. You didn't want anyone to get hurt, but you could have stopped it had you done what you were supposed to do."it's likely one of us will have to spend some days alone"
