Unhappy Amazing how many shops have already gone out of business...

Just did my midnight run downtown. Amazed at how many establishments have already closed for good in downtown nashville. I saw at least 10 "Available for Lease" signs on business that were open just a few weeks ago.., several bars/restaurants, wine bar, fitness center, guitar shop...scary stuff..I cant imagine how bakeries, ice cream parlors, barbershops, and even gyms will make it thru this

Wish I had a good savings. All that is gonna be up for grabs. You think houses will still be cheap 2 years from now? Credit score is good, just don't have the down payment

Any big businesses or just small local ones? If they're already out of business after like 2 weeks then they were probably circling the drain to begin with

small local ones. The big chain shops seem to be doing well actually. Mcdonalds drive thru and starbucks drive thru looks really busy. I think these recessions is where the wealth gap just widens even more

Some are probably cutting their losses early. They probably have enough money to hold onto their business with no income but with the oncoming recession, they're looking at 6-12 months before profitability again. That money can be used pay for mortgage and food while they plan for their next move.

Nobody knows, they could have been new businesses. You do know that sometimes it takes a few years just to make profit right? They could have multiple locations and decided to close the worst performing one to cut costs and try to save the company..just because a business closes now doesnt mean it wasnt fiscally responsible. Businesses dont sit around holding cash for some once in a lifetime pandemic, they usually use the capital to expand and grow since the return on asset is higher

I would normally agree with that sentiment but these are different circumstances. Shops are being forced by govts to close so that means 0 revenue!

Exactly, just as the business closing doesn't mean it was the coronavirus that caused it, there are plenty of small shops still open but closed.

    pretty much this ^.

The situation we are all in, will indeed widen the gap between the big businesses and small ones even further.

Small local vendors here have also closed down but the big chain supermarkets and shops are doing well, as everyone is hoarding chit from there.

It is just sad to see that local caffees and food shops will be closed for a while as they rely on daily income/revenue in order to stay relevant, especially in small towns. 2-4 weeks out of business and you are gone.

yep, i can only imagine how hard it is for these small businesses to stay afloat. Its not like the govt helps them at all like they do the huge corporations. Plus with the increasing minimum wage and competition and paper thin margins...Most people dont realize this but companies need a few years just to reach a profit...and then usually have 4-6 weeks of profitability out of the year

I’m surprised more coffee/food shops didn’t offer take out only . Guess there’s not enough revenue in it .

Things are getting crazy here . Shoppers Drugmart and Super Store now both have security guards posted at the door. If you show symptoms of a cold etc , you don’t get in .
I’ve been fighting a big for a month now , so no chance of getting in , even though I was tested

Lots of places are probably losing money on delivery. Gotta pay a cook, a delivery person, keep utilities on, use up inventory...I would say that the places doing delivery are having its the owners who are helping do it. BTW i saw so many cops out....the are watching the big grocery stores

    Infinitely.

If history is any indication, they'll simply change the inflation calculation until it outputs 2%.

True inflation before this started was closer to 10%.

The inflation tax is very real and is more damaging the further removed you are from the Fed.

Local businesses are living day to day bro. They have been dong badly since big business was allowed to move in to neighborhoods.

Coronavirus was the proverbial nail in the coffin to pack things up and LDAR. The ones that are open are usually those businesses owned by the landlord, or serving some other goods.

Nothing unusual and we will likely see more bug business come in with their scale to restore normalcy if anything.

Small businesses generally don't have the capital to get through something like this unless it was already very well established or the business owner is simply rich. The margins aren't that great for most. New businesses also typically operate at a loss for some time.

Closing after less than a month seems like a case of just cutting their losses early or simply not being successful in the first place, but even successful small businesses can't keep this going for long. They'll be getting big fuking loans though, so who knows.

Went to the little Sainsbury's close to where I live yesterday. They were boarding it up WTF.

For those who don't know Sainsbury's is a massive retail chain in the UK, a bit like a posh British Walmart. Must not have been profitable after da panic buying stopped?

It's really unfortunate that the small guys are getting beat up, but some are getting creative. I've got a relative who owns a popular local bar that he started late 2019. You'd think he'd be fukked but they're doing to-go alcoholic drinks and food. Lots of social media marketing since everyone is on their phones. Whatever is necessary to survive until this passes.
