if you have dumbbells, you can do db flyes, rear delt flyes, front raises for shoulders.

if you have anything flat to lay on, you can do db flyes, db pullovers for chest. do push ups superset with db bench press where you lower them really slowly (will exhaust your chest despite low weighted dbs)

For arms, standing curls, concentration curls. Chin ups if you have a pull up bar
tricep extensions, kickbacks, behind back dips.

For back, pull ups if you have a bar, db rows.

Legs, squats - lunges - calf raises.

I can do most of the things i do in the gym at home, just with 1 pair of dumbbells.
Don't just do curls all day 6x a week.

Why the hell not? Normally, people are worried about overtraining because they’re stressed from work and not getting enough sleep at night. But with those issues resolved, and if the choice is to work out for two or three hours a day or sit around on the couch, why not?

After bench pressing last night, I did like 20+ sets of back and triceps... way more than I would normally do. Because why the hell not?

There's nothing wrong with it. But there's more you can do than just curls. So what op is suggesting isn't optimal.
Mix it up, throw in some triceps and reverse curls/wrist curls for forearms.
Then tomorrow, train some other muscle group etc.

I agree it’s not optimal. But if his options are limited and he usually does a brosplit anyway, I still say who the hell cares.

For myself, I’ve been lifting seven days a week, and sometimes twice a day.

I keep the small workouts pretty short, and I just do low back, hamstrings, and abs (maybe some triceps) on the small workouts.

But on the big workouts, I’ve been hitting it pretty hard. In the past, because of other life issues, I might only do the major lift for the day and call it quits. But I’ve got so much energy now, I’ll knock out all kinds of assistance work.

I know you’re a smart enough guy that you’re probably just joking. But for anybody else, a standard two hour workout is not going to give someone rhabdo LOL.

I think a lot of people worry about overtraining and other issues way too much.

If you start to feel run down from your workouts, shorten them or deload for a week. It’s real simple. I’ve been around athletes, powerlifters, and bodybuilders for over 20 years (and believe it or not, I was a personal trainer for a couple of years 15 years ago), and I’ve never seen that not work before.

Usually stems from a steady increase of work load and steady decrease of sleep and nutrient intake.
It will come slow and **** you up for a while if you don't de load.
You will come back even stronger and your brain will not be fkked

After bench pressing last night, I did like 20+ sets of back and triceps... way more than I would normally do. Because why the hell not?
Don’t your muscles get tired though? After a while it becomes counterproductive to keep training right?

Actually I think football athletes only train an hour max with weights. Rest of their workouts are running or practice drills etc. The weights part is limited.

Yep hospital is probably the most dangerous place in the country to be in rn.

Imagine getting some minor random injury or getting into a car accident or whatever.

Brb ER full of coronacels and all medical personnel infected exhausted and without PPE.

The human body is an adaptation machine. People can run marathons. People can run 100 miles. They can do powerlifting meets on the other extreme.

I used to train with a very good drug-free lifter who trained two or three hours a day, with the shorter days being bench press and the longer days being squat and deadlift. Sometimes twice a day for smaller workouts and olympic lifting. I don’t recall him ever taking a day off during those few years.

People with experience are capable of more than the average weekend warrior because the body adapts.

Also keep in mind the context of my posts. The context was talking about people who are not working or doing the normal life stressful stuff. They’re sitting around on the couch and sleeping eight hours per night.

Right now, recovery abilities are higher for people on stay at home orders.

But do you think there is an argument that more than an hour weights is actually counterproductive for building/maintaining muscle?

So that it’s actually worse for your body when you do more instead of less.

Or do you think more is always better.

I’m sure you can find research pointing in both directions. At 45 minutes or an hour, serum growth hormone and testosterone starts to fall, states some research study. Then I’m sure there are others discrediting that.

I think it probably just depends on the goal. For someone just trying to be healthy, I’m sure it’s probably right to keep it less than an hour.

But I can’t think of anyone that I personally have known who was strong or muscular or both who spent less than an hour on their physical endeavors (or who was good at any other thing in life in less than an hour per day). That doesn’t mean there are not people like that, but it’s just not been my experience.

And yes, I’m an old fat guy now. But I wasn’t always that way.

Well like I said I think they limit football athletes to an hour weights. Rest is spent on cardio or practice. And a ton of money is at stake in football so presumably their strategy is optimal for those athletes. If 2-3 hours of weights were optimal then I’m sure they would do that because there is so much money at stake.

And then let’s put them in a powerlifting meet against Ronnie Coleman who trained two hours hours a day, and we’ll see who wins or gets rhabdo first.

Football is not what I’m talking about, just like bodybuilding was not what you were talking about. See how that works? People with a specific sport would have a specific set of conditions that would need to be met, and strength training would only be one component therein. Where football players have to take care of film/mental work, cardio, skill work, drills, and strength and conditioning is just a portion.

Edit: In other words, you have nothing in common with a football player, and neither do I. The bottom line is that you can do anything in the gym that you can recover from. If you cannot recover from more than an hour a day, don’t do it.
