April is still going to be very painful, but hopefully it will get better in May.

I still can’t see any relevance of tracking the cases, that’s way to skewed based on rapid changes in our ability to test

At least around here, testing standards haven't changed from the start of this. The people being tested are hospitalized cases or people with symptoms and in an at-risk class (elderly, underlying issues, or healthcare workers). That's no different than a month ago. If the testing standards stay the same, then about the same percentage of the total cases should be caught by testing, and the growth of the confirmed cases is a decent proxy for the growth of the total cases. I don't know about other areas of the country, though, and for sure, the confirmed cases is only a small fraction of the true total cases.

The US has added almost 2k to the death toll today alone. But, but, this doesn't mean much, we're told (but not told why it doesn't mean much when asked). SMH.

There are 1900+ deaths just today and the number is still rising. There will likely be 50,000 by the end of this month. I don't think the final number is going to be "way under" the range. Probably in the lower end of it, but one thing the social distancing and "curve flattening" does is elongate the period we're dealing with it, too, so the deaths will unfortunately continue through the fall at least, although hopefully at a slower, controllable rate.

*does not include at-home deaths, and other deaths related to lack of healthcare due to healthworker shortage as they're dealing with the Covid-19.

    But nah, inb4 2k deaths ain't chit.

Testing is crap and IMO the biggest failure on the Federal level.

There are 1500 symptomatic health care workers at one hospital in Detroit.

Said they "don't have enough tests" to actually test these people.

I've read way too many reports of people that have symptoms, but can't get tested when there should be massive widespread testing. I do think part of the foot dragging was denial and politically motivated (don't want to identify more positive cases).

If we don't learn anything else from this I do hope that the US will create the means to do better next time around. At the very least we should have a strategic stockpile of the chemicals and vials needed for viral testing.

I’m expecting more deaths in the month of April than June-August combined. Next winter is what worries me.

Still worried that it will be seasonal, or do a second lap?

I'm very much hoping that isn't the case. Warm weather doesn't seem to shut it down and I read that the mutation rate is very slow comparative to the flu viruses.

For a second lap I would think that the virus would have to continue the chain of infection through the summer; just maybe not in the US.

That would make it seem that the so-called first world countries need to stir themselves to stamp out the disease in poorer countries where it may just be starting to explode.

So that it doesn't lap back around and kick us in the ass.

I'm guessing this is going to peak at around 5k deaths per day or so before it tapers down

I absolutely think it will be seasonal. Warm weather will reduce spread. There’s very little question about that. It won’t completely eliminate it of course, even influenza still exists year round in the US.

And I’m not sure how it’s mutation rate compares to influenza, but CV is still an RNA virus. It on average will have a high mutation rate. Don’t expect a vaccine to eradicate this virus like Smallpox. I think we’ll see prevalence of the virus increase in the Southern Hemisphere over the next couple months.

Coronavirus seems to mutate much slower than seasonal flu

Based on current data, it seems as though SARS-CoV-2 mutates much more slowly than the seasonal flu. Specifically, SARS-CoV-2 seems to have a mutation rate of less than 25 mutations per year, whereas the seasonal flu has a mutation rate of almost 50 mutations per year.

Given that the SARS-CoV-2 genome is almost twice as large as the seasonal flu genome, it seems as though the seasonal flu mutates roughly four times as fast as SARS-CoV-2. The fact that the seasonal flu mutates so quickly is precisely why it is able to evade our vaccines, so the significantly slower mutation rate of SARS-CoV-2 gives us hope for the potential development of effective long-lasting vaccines against the virus.
IDK about a vaccine. Maybe if we get herd immunity without letting it make a second pass we can live without a vaccine.

    I know it's a long shot.

The possibility that we *might* have up to half of those infected with very mild/asymptomatic cases makes me a little more hopeful. For some time the number of positive tested asymptomatic was being reported as 20% or less. Then I saw one item out of Italy where infection is more widespread where they did a blood drive and found that a lot of those donating blood were infected and did not know it.

I would dearly love near 100% virus testing/anti-body testing in NYC. Or at least Westchester County which has a high rate of cases.

The "testing doesn't matter because the treatment will be the same" people really make me mad.

Testing does matter. And we (globally) should be testing like crazy because good data is the crucial tool we need to make good decisions.

The other part of that prediction was also fukkin retarded too. Whilst it is mostly hitting older populations and those with comorbidities badly, plenty of people dying from it were not "on the verge of death". They usually have other health problems, like hypertension, diabetes, atherosclerosis etc. but many were living relatively normal lives and not hospitalised prior to getting infected. There aren't even words to describe that level of utter stupidity.

April is still going to be very painful, but hopefully it will get better in May.
disturbing trend in the US is the rise in case fatality rate - now up to 3.2%. This keeps rising as it did in Italy and Spain weeks before.

It may get better in May due to the social distancing efforts in April, but what nobody is really talking about is what happens after the end of April. Without a vaccine to inoculate the entire population, you can't go back to eating at restaurants, going to concerts or sporting events, etc. If social distancing is relaxed, the numbers will spike up again.

Nobody is talking about it because nobody wants to face the reality that we will be living this way for quite a few months to come. The leaders just haven't told us that yet plainly because a lot of people would freak out. some of them post on this forum.

It's possible though I'm skeptical. Look at the rate of growth in tropical countries like India and Philippines and in southern hemisphere countries like Australia who are coming out of their summer. They are seeing exponential growth similar to northern hemisphere countries. It would be great if we got a break, but we just don't know enough to say that with any degree of certainty.

I've been hearing about this. I'm not sure what to believe. I hear this is a reason why the numbers vary by country so much.

If an infected person dies in a car accident, are they going to count it as a COVID death?

Not necessarily a joke. If the person would have lived but for the fact that he/she contracted C-19 then what's wrong with reporting the death as a C-19 related death regardless of underlying conditions?

Reduce, as in relative to the rate it would spread in the same area in colder conditions. There are a multitude of factors influencing spread. Temperature is one of them, and it looks to be one of the more predictive variables. If you look at a global map, the two best predictors are population density and temperature. This isn’t to say the virus doesn’t spread in warmer temps or less dense areas. Obviously the best data will come over time, as it allows for us to control for other potential covariates.

Even more powerful than the epidemiological evidence is the fact we have a number of studies demonstrating reduced environmental longevity at higher temps. This comes at no surprise because of the high density lipid membrane.

Explain to me how you determine they would have lived with Stage 4 cancer longer with or without Coronavirus. If they died a month earlier than their prognosis, does it even matter? What if they had NO symptoms and still died...does it matter?
