Recommend doorway pull up bar?

I typically don't venture into this section, since I'm not usually interested in equipment and don't have a home gym, but I guess it's probably getting more popular now.

I'm doing calisthenics now that gyms are closed. No problem for upper body, since I have gymnastics background. No way I'm bringing in 500 lbs of plates into a small 2nd floor apartment in a 100 year old house anyway.

I was browsing some online gym equipment (clicked through on an email ad) and discovered these doorway pull up bars that rest on the top trim to get in position but seem to mainly work by friction resisting the moment by the offset weight. I don't wanna wreck my apartment trim, since it's pretty elaborate and maybe as old as the house.

Anyone have one of these? Any recommendation on one? It's only something I'd use while gyms are closed. Probably sell it when they open again. But Parks & Rec just closed all children's playgrounds, and the tree out front has kinda awkwardly angled branches. So if I can get a decent bar that won't wreck my landlord's fancy trim it may be an option.

Oh, and also wondering if doing front and back levers are safe with these (maybe they mess with the direction of force too much and dislodge the bar?)

I'm not spending 100 bucks on one, but if there's one that isn't cheapo crap in the 30-50 dollar range and ships fast I may buy it.

TL;DR just looking for a doorway pull up bar that won't damage my apartments fancy trim. Not too pricey cuz I'd probably sell it when gyms open again.

Honestly they're not hard to find in general, though availability may be scarce now...I decided against this because I had one years ago that DID damage my doorway. I got a free standing power tower instead which offers a better workout anyway.

Someone posted one recently where instead of going in the doorway, you attach it to a wall with anchors, I'd probably go that route before trying the doorway rig. And there's a set of dip bars you can attach as well.

Otherwise if you're not getting the response you want look through some of the misc and equipment threads, there've been several on this recently.

Afaik, they're all of a similar design,so there is some potential to damage the trim. However, if you're not swinging from it (e.g. doing those fake Crossfit pullups), jumping up to reach it, or otherwise exerting unnecessary forces on it, it would likely be quite some time before any damage to the trim occurred unless it's already weakened to begin with. I've had an Iron Gym for about 10 years and only use it occasionally, but the trim is all still intact.

Also I just realized OP - with your gymnastics background have you thought about hanging a couple of rings from your ceiling? I've seen a couple people suggest that and had never thought of it before, but it sounds doable and affordable.

I haven't done pull ups yet with my gymnastics rings, but I can confirm it will be 100% doable. Currently I use them for suspended push ups. Regarding a doorway pull up bar, the only one I would trust is the Rogue Jammer Bar, which appears to be in stock with a long delivery time. I don't own one, but all indicators are that it's rock solid. I have used other doorway bars and there's a 99% chance you will do some damage to your door trim and a non-zero chance that it will fail in some way and you'll injure yourself. Avoid any sort of kipping/crossfit or inverted movements with a traditional doorway bar. I would avoid levers too.

Stay with me for a moment, I know it's not a popular brand, but this was the best one I have used. Granted, I only had the P90X and IronGym versions briefly but the elevated one was ALOT nicer for a doorway pullup bar. But like others have mentioned, damage to the trim is inevitable with these designs.

Rings would be freaking awesome and my ceiling is like 11 feet high but it's plaster so stud finders don't work and finding joists is a royal PITA. Maybe I'll check out that elevated one. Or perhaps I could get rings and put them on the tree. Hmm...

I'm sure there's a way you can find the studs. Not all stud finders are created equal and the joists should be at even intervals. I'd google a bit before you write it off.

If you must, but door pullup bars suck especially for any non-hobbit.

Better to have a rack with a pullup bar or a wall mounted one for extra height.
