Audio Heads: Recommend me some headphones that AREN'T ATH-M50s

SIX fuking years ago I purchased a pair of ATH-M50s for $150. Best headphones i've ever had and they've lasted forever. The only annoying thing about them is that the cord is like fuking 15ft long. super fuking annoying.

Anyways, it's time to purchase a new pair. Is there anything from Sennheiser, AKG, or other manufacturers I should be considering in the $150 - $250 price bracket? I don't use pre-amps or any of that chit. Mostly a casual listener, but my music comes from Tidal HiFi which offers Masters(CD Quality Downloads).

I mean if you loved the M50s, why not get the m50x's? Comes with a shorter cable.

Plus you need to let us know if you want closed or open back, if you're listening only at home or out in public, etc.

Any decent set of cans will let you swap the cord out for something of your preferred length, including M50s.

Not being a dick. If that's all you dislike about your M50s, get a new cord for ~5 bucks and call it good!

I never considered open back headphones because when I bought them I had a roommate at the time. Live alone now so open backs are good to go!

95% sure M50's didn't allow a cable swap. but the M50x does sound like a nice compromise.

If you want to try an open ear style and stay in the Audio Technica family, I'd recommend the ATH-AD700x's. Maybe not the best for bass heavy music, but it's so immersive due to the huge soundstage. Great clarity too.

Full disclose - I own both m50x's and ad700s lol.

since u r ok with open back, check out Grado SR125e and up, Grados are my fave sounding headphones and I have the older sr125 model but I also have and like the M50s for a closed back option, so the m50x is probably good too but I like grado open back phones when closed isn’t necessary

those were my upgrade from ATH-M50. But if you like the ATH-M50 so much, they have a version with the coiled cable instead of straight?
"So there I am sitting in the waiting area of the hair salon with my niece and Keanu Reeves walks in. I was nervous as ****, but too scared to say anything to him. Then my niece started crying, and I’m trying to quiet her down because I don't want to bother him. Pretty soon he walks over and asks what's wrong. I replied that she was probably hungry. He put down his magazine, picked up my niece, and lifted up his shirt, and breastfed her right there in the salon. Chill guy, really nice about it."

I'd go with the ATH-M50x if you want something cheap with a changeable cord. I have the Sennheiser HD598SE and the AT ATH-M50S as well as my Apple earbuds and some cheap IEMs I have. My favorite set of headphones I've ever heard were the Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro 250ohm. BUT you will need a good headphone amp with these.

Whats the difference between open and closed backs? Im looks for some good fukkin bass heavy headphones. I had a pair of the V-MODA crossfades which were sick. But the little metal screws came out and got lost.

closed back has a solid piece of plastic (or whatever material) on back of each earpiece and better for isolating from outside noise and keeping ur music from bleeding out around u, so they r better if u are out in public or in a home with other people etc, open back will have holes on the back piece and let’s more air in so the sound can be more open and sound more like listening on stereo speakers, cons are they let noise in and music bleeds out so not good for public places or if u don’t want to disturb other people around u

you wont get the strong bass with open. air bleeds out of open giving your sound space to breathe, and gets a more natural and open sound. closed backs (like the v moda) are sealed so all the sound goes straight into your ear. I had a pair of v modas when I first got into this hobby and I'm several upgrades later (current favorite is the focal clear). V modas have a strong bass but its very muddy, and once I experienced clear bass I couldnt go back.

I had it, and probably not. You need some really high end source/amplification, great headphones, and a discerning ear to recognize any difference. For me personally, even with thousands of dollars into a setup, it was really hard to pick it out double blind.

OP stop being scared and spend like $500-800 on the headphone/amp combo it will go a lot further.

95% sure M50's didn't allow a cable swap. but the M50x does sound like a nice compromise.

So much preference that is hard to really figure out without trying things, but for me personally I would go with a Focal Elex & a Massdrop Cavalli Hybrid Tube Amp.

You can't match the dynamics and all-arounder capability of the Focal Elex anywhere near the price range in my experience.

    https://drop.com/buy/massdrop-x-focal-elex-headphones
    https://drop.com/buy/massdrop-x-alex...ube-hybrid-amp

Someone also wouldn't be wrong to suggest starting with a Sennheiser HD650 or Massdrop equivalent version. That would be cheaper.

^ You can find a ton of used headphones through that convenient search engine. It's a really reliable community in general for secondary market transactions, and you are pretty much 100% covered no matter what when paying through Paypal Goods & Services. I've bought headphones for $1,500, used them for three months, and then sold them back for a small profit. Things don't fluctuate a whole lot, and you can find deals regularly from people who just can't be fukked to wait to get what something is worth.

    Jabra Elite 65t.

Purchased them about 6 months ago and I use them 5 days a week at gym and they're fukn amazing.

    Quality of sound is amazing.
Strong bluetooth connection (you can be 10-15 meters away from your bluetooth device and still have great connection/audio quality).
Really comfortable earpieces (can honestly leave them in my ears for hours without experiencing any discomfort or pain).
They come with small, medium & large rubber moulds so you can choose which ever size is best suited to your ear.
Long lasting battery (lasts for about 10 hours or so when using the charge case every night after a gym session).
    Portable charge case.
Mobile phone app to customise sound quality, etc.
Can control volume, skip songs, pause/play, etc. with the ear pieces so you barely have to use your phone.
    Water resistant.

Solid 10/10 earphones for gym, day to day activities, etc.

    Monoprice...very inexpensive, pretty good.

    https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-Hea...CN3NZTQ5NWR12R

I also have a headphone amp that cost x4 the price of this one, but it seems to be failing, so I got these ones. They are actually better.

    https://www.amazon.com/Neoteck-Headp...3XXZKPV8M0FHZR

These are a little better for bass

    https://www.amazon.com/OneOdio-Adapt...8364ZQK1ZR6M2H

But how the ear part is held on is prone to breaking. I safety wired it so it doesn't break, but if you have no idea what that is....it will break eventually.

I've had $400 headphones, they break. So I went down to @$200, they break. Then just $150 and of course they break. These two I link are chump change and I am very happy with the sound they make along with the amp.

recommend the hd6xx from massdrop. I sold mine, but only because I got some new earpads for my Senn HD595 i've had for over 10 years and that don't need to be amped to sound good. Never used the Hd6xx but they sounded great with an amp.

Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro if you want open back headphones with fairly neutral "reference" sound. Just keep in mind that you need an amp (80 and 250 ohm options).

After researching for an hour or two yesterday the HD6XX seems to be exactly what I want. Going to wait until the end of the month before purchasing though. I always give myself a week or so before springing for "want" purchases.

I like to think so. Never did a double blind test. I just know when I got my ATHM50's I wanted to make sure I had a quality audio source, and for me paying $120 per year difference between Premium and HiFi is negligible

Nah I'm sweet bro. There's definitely a rate of diminishing returns when it comes to this hobby. I was fortunate enough to not go down the rabbit hole.

I bought my ATHM50s, and it was 6 years of the best listening quality i'd experienced in my life for $150. Right before I purchased them, I remember doing tons of research on audiophile forums and regularly reading about guys who dumped $2,000+ into audio setups just to say "but at the end of the day, most times I just throw on my M50s".

So yeah, I'm gonna check out these HD6XX because they seem to pack a similar bang-per-buck. Not to mention a different listening experience being open-back.
